Homemaking: How do you keep it together during the holidays?

When I got out of bed and came in the living room this morning, I really wanted to dive back under the covers and not come out. There are two in-the-works crafts projecst spread out on the kitchen table, then kid's homework desk is stacked with boxes of christmas decor, the small tree for the front porch is set up but not plugged in because I need some extension cords. I've got gifts to make, cookies to bake, the normal housework to keep up with, and this place looks more like it's been hit by a cyclone than full of festive holiday fun! I can't even image what it's going to be like once my oldest is out of school for winter break starting Thursday. So how do other families stay organized to finish all their projects and activities and still enjoy the holidays? And maybe the more important question is *why* am I sitting here at the computer instead of getting up and getting to work on all of it?

the very reason why you're sitting infront of your computer is not much about earning money in this site. but because you want to free your mind first about all your concerns. you're just annoyed. and just like you, my one way of erasing irritations, i go and talk to friends. but since they can't be around, i log on to the mylot site and talk to people here. it's one great way to know that other people help you out about things. well, i am the eldest in the family. i have two other younger brothers. and i usually do most tasks at home. but i never complained. i love doing my chores. but i get annoyed sometimes whenever i see the scattered things in the living room.. just like you! but then, i jsut pick up everything and put everything back in place. and ofcourse, i always get the small chat thing with my brothers asking them not to disarrage things. and they do listen. it's just sometimes, they forget to put everything back where they belong. hehehe. good luck to you.! you can do it!

unfortunately, i am in the same boat as i stare at the unwrapped gifts, boxes, packing supplies & random decorations that litter my dining room ;) when it really starts to bother me i will get oflfine, put everything in it's spot & not sweat the rest. it all comes together in the end, as always :)

I know what you mean, it is like sometimes I have no incentive to get up in the AM to do chores, that is why they can not afford us housewives, NO ONE CAN and we do what we can to try to make ourselves feel better by making or earning some sort of income but still be at home...
I hear ya on the house thing, we had lost power for 2 days and just got it back up this evening, plus we are selling our house and all these people want to come and see it. We told our realtor the other day that we have no power and so therefore NO they can not come to see it until the power is back on and we have had a day to clean it up. We have fire wood scattered, My husband moved couches and chairs next to the fireplace so we could keep warm, we have blankets on blankets on blankets Strewn all over the house EVERYWHERE, laundry piled up high and I finally have been able to wash a load of dishes this evening. We went to bed at like 7PM this evening and got power back up at like 10:30 then I just could not sleep I just kept thinking MAN, we have a lot to do, I have tons of Catchup to do, and we have a showing tomorrow at 1PM
I know that we will enjoy the holidays though, but yes it is freaking hard work and tough to get motivated sometimes.

To keep the things organised and clean in the Kitchen is an art. By practice and patience this art can be made normal in one's life. To start with one has to train his or her mind to accept the disorder and get a feeling that ORDER is requisite for all the fruits in life.
To start with sing your favourite song in low voice, and the ears will take care of to reach it to your mind. The mind will be peaceful after some time and you go ahead with arranging the things in Kitchen.
Though it is easy to advise , it is not that difficult to practice. If you feel this will work, share it with like minded people and thank me within your wisdom.

I do so sympathise with this situation, we are a very creative household and the place is packed with current projects. We found Flylady helped a bit, not necessariliy following it to the letter but the basic idea of breaking jobs down into short sessions and keeping moving on til the next one so you don't get stale and still keep chipping away at it all

I used to get very overwhelmed at this time of year. I guess what has helped me is that I stop and reflect on the reason for the season. When I put the focus where it belongs, I realize a lot of the running around is self inflicted.
We just went to cut down our tree yesterday. We decorated the outside of the house and are still in the process of decorating the tree. Yes, the house is in not in order, but that's all part of decorating.
I'm having some family members over to the house for the season. As long as the food is plenty and tasty, and we enjoy seeing each other, that's important. The gifts, well, as far as I'm concerned, they're way over rated.
Christmas is the celebration of Jesus' birth. I'm wondering what He would say as He watches us drive ourselves into a frenzy to celebrate His birthday. Christmas should not be synonymous with debt, tiredness and anxiety. It should be a time of love, joy and celebration.
Slow down. Take a moment and remember why and what we're celebrating.
I wish you a very Merry Christmas!

I am a multi-tasker, and I still get behind. I am on the computer while I do laundry and read last Sunday's paper. Yes, LAST Sunday's. I already have today's (Saturday's) waiting to be looked at and tomorrow's will be here too. I have not wrapped one gift yet. I can't figure out how to multi-task while wrapping gifts. LOL!

Over the years, I have simplified. We do our decorating the day after Thanksgiving, but keep baking to a minumum these days. School breask always mean additional mess, but the kids should eventually be old enough to be responsibel for some of the tidying.
All I can say is that if the things you do to celebrate the holidays are actually getting in the way of your joy, cut things out and enjoy the simple acts of family and time spent together.
