Anybody NOT donate blood for whatever reason?

Let me say first of all that being able to donate blood is a wonderful thing. It saves lives, and as long as you're healthy and willing, why not give? However, some people just can't give blood. They're anemic, or maybe they have tattoos or piercings, or are nursing mothers, etc. Or maybe have had a really traumatic experience which has kept them from donating again.
The last (and only time) I donated blood, my husband and I both passed out. It was a horrible experience. Since then I've been either pregnant, nursing, had a body piercing, or probably not been healthy enough to have it done.
What about you?

I'm the same. I was really suprised when they told me that, too! Apparantly we have just enough blood to support those precious organs until we pass, huh? :)

That's great you still give. :) I think after a certain amount of time passes after getting a piercing or tattoo, it's ok. But I remember I had my cartilage pierced, and a few months afterward tried to donate blood.. I was turned away.

I might not have had enough to eat that day.. I'm not sure. I barely had enough iron in my blood to donate, as it was. LOL

I don't donate blood, because I donate plasma. Plasma is needed very badly as well, and you can donate more often
(twice a week). And plus....not to sound mercenary, but they pay you for it. Here it's fifty dollars a week cash, if you donate twice a week, twenty dollars each time if you only give once a week, and the center I go has free child care. I've done it for over ten years, but I've never given blood. Funny, isn't it?

What about donating marrow? Have you ever done that? I thought about it one time.. there was somebody in the news who was very sick and I hadn't realized before then that you could donate marrow. And that's what they needed..

I had glandular fever a few years ago and was told that because of this I can not donate blood. I was surprised to hear this.

I've tried several times, but as a minor I was unable to get parental consent. And since I was 18 I have been pregnant (I'm 21 now), and they don't take blood donations from anemic pregnant women (especially when there are already problems). But I'm hoping this go around they'll let me get my tubes tied & i'll b able to donate blood after I have my baby & get done nursing.

I have never donated blood. I can not handle needles! When I was pregnant and they had to take 5 viles of blood for routine blood tests, I almost passed out! They can never find a good vein on me on the first try. They poked me 7 times before getting a good vein when I was pregnant with my 2nd child. I don't think I would be a good blood donor candidate!

I can't donate blood because I am on medication. It's a shame beause I agree that giving blood is really important thing to do. Needles don't bother me and also, I would like to have the free biscuit and cup of tea they give you! lol So if I am ever able to come off my antidepressants I will definitely give blood.

I tried donating blood before (my friend encouraged me) but I found out from their exam that I was anemic, so I can't that time. I
haven't tried donating blood again so I'm not sure if I'm still anemic or not.

I think it's a wonderful thing to be able to do, but unfortunately I haven't been able to due to a slight iron deficiency. I need the blood I have. Of course there has been a while since I last tested to see if I would be eligible to donate blood, so maybe I should ask my doctor next time I see him.
