I Want to Be A Cadaver!

Why do we bury the bodies our loved ones aren't using anymore? More to the point, why do we bury them intact? I mean, we drain the blood from them, fill them with preservatives, casket them, vault them, and then stick them in the ground to decompose as slowly as possible... What a Waste! When I'm done with this body, I want it to be used to teach future doctors, nurses, paramedics and others. Gross Anatomy was one of my favorite classes in college, and I want to give others the same learning experience I had. Of course, there are other worthy uses, donating organs and tissues for research or use by others is a great thing to do! There are religious reasons why a person wouldn't want their parts used after they're done, and I'm sure there are other personal reasons, but aside from those, why do we just waste our bodies?

I'm an organ donor. They can take whatever they want from me when I die since I won't be needing it! I've thought about donating my body for science but then I heard about "reef balls" where they cremate your body, mix your ashes with concrete and make it into a ball. Then it's used to help restore and create reefs out in the oceans.

That's a good idea too! Especially for after the cadaver has been fully dissected, or the organs have been harvested.

I figure it's one way to help both others by being a donor and the enviroment!

I've never heard about "reef balls"; what a great idea. I'm with you, I don't care what they do with the parts that I won't be needing anymore. If anything is usable, then go ahead and use it. I haven't signed the papers for organ donation on my driver's license ( I think that's all that it takes, isn't it?). I guess that this is something we should think about now, before it's too late to make the decision. It's kind of like a will- you have to make your wishes known in advance.

what you say is logically and scientifically very correct, even then the very thought of people gouging my eyes out and slitting my torso, gives my the creeps. even though i would not need this body of mine after I die, i cannot give it for medical research. i would rather be cremated in the Hindu way.

I think personally it's the right thing to do. If you suddenly get killed in an accident, and your organs are in tact other than your brain... it would be right to donate but some may have their reasons not to want to sign their cards. I think personally it's a waste too, just to bury your body right away anyway. There is a lot of need for researchers to use cadavers. I wouldn't want my body to go to waste, and if I can't be of any use for anyone being alive, then maybe I can make up for it after I die!

True, people have their reasons for choosing not to, and I'd hate to see any laws requiring it.

I want to be an organ donor when i die - if possible. I do not want them to bury me intact if i can save someones life with some part of my body!

Have you ever read the book Stiffs by Mary Roach before? It's all about cadavars so it might be of interest to you. I love the way she writes as well!

It's probably not something people think of too much to be honest. Also the families might not like the thought of their loved ones being cut up and used in experiments etc. I know it would help so many people to donate organs and every body should do it but I have to say I can't stand the thought of my partner being an organ donor. Especially things like eyes, I couldn't stand the thought that he didn't still have them when he was gone. That being said I will probably donate my organs.

Donating is good, not everyone is ready for that. wait until your time is coming, then pray they will do what you wanted with you.
