I had a horrible sinus infection and I went to the doctor. He gave me antibiotics which I needed but he also gave me a pain pill and said take it if I feel any pain.I did not say I had pain but just was coughing and had nasal congestion.I was shocked he would give me a pain reliever with codeine.Am I overreacting? What do you think?

Some doctors do prescribe medication to readily. But I think those are the exception to the rule. The doctor I have only prescribes medications only if is absolutely needed. Any other time he rcommends over the counter medication. That's why I've continued going to him.

I think in some cases they do, in others they don't. I know I suffer from really horrible headaches/migraines. I went to the doctor and they gave me Motrin. Unfortunately, military doctors are prone to giving out Motrin only. That's their "cure-all". It didn't help me at all. I haven't seen a civilian doctor in years so I don't know about that.
