Will TV soon become obsolete?

The internet is becoming increasingly popular as a source of entertainment, news and information. More people are spending more time online than ever before. I haven't seen any studies, but I'd be willing to wager that household TV watching time (at least amongst people between 15 and 40) has declined over the past fifteen years, and the internet is the biggest reason why. Is it reasonable to believe that, if this trend continues, that TV and the internet will, in the next two decades, start to merge? Will news media funding sources begin to move online to capture the changing market? Will TV soon become obsolete?

no, i don't think so. it's a big world out there, elektra. there are still whole lot of places in the world that don't have internet or computers or even phones. i live in such a place (philippines). i'm just lucky that i can access the internet during work and sometimes at home when i have time. but for millions of people in the world - the major source of information and entertainment is still the TV and the radio.

TV will never become obsolete. It's just like the radio. The first thing that appeared was the radio than the TV but still these days the radio is not obsolete. It's true though that the internet it's taking it's share of the cake but it will not take over the TV. The technological boom that has take the world by surprise is not only referring to the internet or computers. The new age technology comes to revive the television. As the flat screen tube revolutionized the quality, the appearance of the DVD added new possibility to the viewing pleasure of the television, the new HD - TV technology comes to a support for the TV. It will not become obsolete.

Emerging digital and satellite technologies are transforming the world's experience of television. News and information channels such as CNN and al-Jazeera reach audiences across national and regional boundaries. These developments are complicated and fortified by entertainment formats, movies and forms of popular music in particular, that also aim for global audiences.

I think so, TV will not be popular as some years ago like the telephone as cellphones are now being used. We really get the entertainment, news, and information we like from the internet. We can chat, search, etc using the internet while yes, TV, still ok, but the use is also waning.

I don't think the internet will take over television viewing. I agree that for many tv is their source to the outside world. For me I love my tv. Sure the internet is great but I have to admit that after 13 or so years of using the internet I get bored with it. Video killed the radio star but this wired charged highway won't kill tv :)

I don't think T.V. will become obsolete. T.V. will always have the budget and ease of use to have more things on it to keep people watching. Plus T.V. will be adding more online type things to it. Finding things online that you like is more work because you have to search for it and then weed through the searches. My question is will reality T.V. take over regular T.V. programing.

Personally I don't think so. I feel that TV and internet are two different things. I wouldn't want to watch TV programs on my computer and I don't find surfing on my TV set to be of any real point. I don't see TV going anywhere because of digital cable and TV stations wouldn't want to lose the $$. But I could be wrong.

no I didn't s think so because of in India still only 1% or less than 1% of people have pc & only 5%of them have internet so if it happens it will take too much time.

Good for you Elektra and you also have good taste in music. I have lp's with some nice sounding scatchy noises but they're in hibernation until they become popular again like as in retro. Or is that only with certain clothing like Bellbottoms? haha! Merry Christmas And enjoy your music.

I kind of agree with you. But pretty soon their going to make a portable TV with internet, that can hold music, play videos, hold pictures, play video game. Sort of like the PSP just more revolutionary. So if they do that then people won't spend time at home no more!

Analog televisions will be useless after this date unless they are connected to a digital-to-analog receiver.

Currently, the broadcasting companies are still using Analog, although right now, you cannot buy a new analog television. This is because of the mass amount of analog TV's still being used by the general public. It is estimated that an analog television has a life span of 20 or more years. Sometime in the next 20 years, the broadcasting companies will discontinue broadcasting analog and be strictly digital, meaning that any analog televisions out there will no longer recieve a signal. So everyone out there, if your considering buying a new television, be certain that it is an HDTV digital television set.

I absolutely agree totally with you and yes I do think Tv will become obsolete. People are becoming more and more advantageous as the years go on and TV is frankly quite boring. Repeat after Repeat after Repeat on the TV!!! Great Question!
