Christmas Is Not Xmas... Are you one of those who fall for this error?

I really don't know who coined the word or abbreviation Xmas and when it was started. I just think that it is inappropriate and much more irreverent to defile the REAL essence and subject of Christmas... that is CHRIST. He is the reason why people celebrate this occasion.
For me Christ is never synonymous as X and i usually use this letter to denote a mistake. Christ coming is never a mistake. Xmas signifies the absence of Christ.
Are you guilty of commiting such error when you send "Christmas" greetings?!

I too dislike 'Xmas', preferring 'Christ's Mass', but it's not as irreverent as it seems. 'X' is the Greek character for 'chi' and has been used since early times to denote Christ. There is some thought that it was used as a secret password for those in the know, in a similar fashion to drawing the fish symbol, as a way to hide the early Christians from their persecutors.
Some people prefer to write Xmas or Xian rather than Christmas or Christian, believing that to write 'Christ' is sacriligous.
I prefer to celebrate Christ

Why does it matter what people call the holiday? And I'm so sick of people putting so much emphasis on Jesus at Christmas time. Research on the holiday. Christmas was around long before Jesus was ever born. Constantine just proclaimed the celebration of Christ's birth on Dec 25th because the Romans didn't want to give up their main holiday - which took place on the 25th.
Besides that, not everyone celebraes a secular holiday. Heck, I'm Christian and I don't.

I revere Jesus as well. But I also know the history of the holiday, and the fact of the matter is, Christians didn't begin the holiday. They just stuck the name Christmas on an already existing holiday. Jesus was born in late summer/early fall, not December.

dunetrekker- there are lots of us who believe in Jesus, believe in God, read the bible, pray, etc. That does not mean we have to put emphasis on either during the holidays if they choose not to. Celebrate in whatever way you wish, but don't make others feel like sinners or something because they don't do it your way.
Christmas was once considered a pagan holiday was it not? At some point?
I as well choose not to put emphasis on religion during this time of year, or any other time, for that matter. I'd rather focus on being with family, which is also important.

Actually, it was the Christians of the middle ages who coined "Xmas". X meant the "sign of the cross". I guess some people today use it as a way of removing "Christ" from Christmas, but actually they are merely crossing themselves while doing it. ;~D

It must be backbreaking, working so hard to find offense where none is intended. Personally, I feel there is enough overt offense out there, no reason to "discover" what isn't there.

When I see stuff with Xmas I think more of Santa and the non-religious side of Christmas. I don't think I have ever seen a religious card with Xmas on it but I have seen non-religious, silly ones with it.

LOL! yes! you just made me feel guilty hahah. I do sometimes commit an error with this, because I am too lazy writing the whole word. Thank you for reminding me. This is an eye opener for all of us! I sometimes forget about this, I've heard this before from a priest that christmas shouldn't be written as Xmas. Great post dunetrekker!

I know some people from the church that does this sometimes but I really never gave it a second thought. I mean I know they know what Christmas is all about and I know they love Christ with their whole heart I don't think they are being irreverent when they do it. as for the X usually being used to denote a mistake and christ was never a mistake I don't think this is in anyones mind when they shorten it. I have done it once in awhile am I guilty of nothing wrong. I don't feel it is an issue. I know what Christmas is all about. I believe in Christ with my whole heart and soul. But I don't think the Xmas is an issue. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas

I learned this mistake when I was in High School. My teacher said not to use Xmas to Christmas because it is eliminating the word Christ which is actually the very essence of Christmas itself.

wow i do agree with you. That is nice to hear. Coz in our church we are not advice to use x'mas becoz x represents wrong and christmas is never been wrong. So we must use The Whole Word Christmas. Also u represents Christ as an X since Christmas is X'mas with other people which is not good.

I agree, it drives me mad!!! It really does remove Christ from christmas!!! That is the whole meaning fo it isn't it, the coming of christ to us to save us!!! I think people who say or write it the other way are anti christians and thry to have a holiday ut detatch christ and god form it. I totally agree with everything oyu say and feel offended when i see it int hat form (I won't even write it in this post). And I never write it to anyone else, not evenin a test message or anything else like it.

I think that people should just write out the whole word... how much harder is it for someone to write a mere 5 letters more. I agree with you though. people should not just start taking Christ out of Christmas. People should stop slacking off, and just write the word, how it is supposed to be. Kind of like people taking birthday and just using b-day.

I agree. Christ is the reason for the holiday, His name should not be removed from the holiday. It's not right to take his name out.
