Why are there so many negative remarks about Americans on MyLot?

I have read a lot of nasty remarks about America and it's people. I think it is mean and not truthful. Are these people jealous of our freedom? We are always there to offer a helping hand to others. We are not a power aggressive country. We prosper because we are educated and work together. So many countries come to America to live. Why would they do it if we were so horrible?

What you say is right, but the remarks on MyLot are that Americans are selfish and horrible people. Not a word about Bush.

Sunflowergirl, you have hit the point! Because they spend for military purposes just to show they are smart that's the reason why their people are all in debt and their public debt is the larger in the world.
Their govt doesnt love the nation or else would reduce the military bills and decrease the taxes. It's very silly ....

In india (where i'm from) there is a lot of anti-american sentiment. The government is to blame mainly for this sentiment. Well, as we kno Bush likes to stick his nose in other's business, not like clinton who was more reserved compared to him. Also the personal discrimination against Indians in particular, being branded as terrorists and being suspended at airports to be interrogated by the police for no other reason that they are Indians.
one can't discriminate a particular race and brand it as one that causes terror. In the same way one can't say that all Americans are bad and are like Bush, there are many exceptions. if the politicians change themselves, it brings about a massive change in reputation of the country as these guys are mainly in the news and what they do influences the mind of the common man more.

Thank you for sharing your feelings. Bush is an awful stupid man, and the worst president the USA has had. It's like Hilter and German people. The leaders of a country, make it awful, but the people are innocent. To me, people are people. We all feel, eat, blead, love the same. America has always been very helpful to others in need, and I got very upset by the nasty comments about the people, not Bush.

If a leader of a country make mistakes I dont see the reason why the country might have a good reputation. I think that the entire nazi Germany was defeated not only Hitler, isnt it ? That is very childish, how could someone say that if a bad people is allowed to make bad things when he rule a nation and the Congress has no intention to stop him someone could applaud them ??? If you dislike him why dont change him??Do you need more strong signals from other countries to do something ??

I agree completely with you, and what is sad is that the majority of them who are putting us down so badly, have never even met one of us! They were probably taught to hate us from the day they were born, so there isn't much we can do about it. Maybe we should never get involved with these countries to try to help? Maybe we should just let them kill each other just as they have done for centuries? I have always had so much compassion for my fellow man, but I am getting tired of getting put down for untrue things. If a child is told that something blue is red every day of their lives, then they will see red no matter what anyone says, so why try?

I find much irony in what you say; "maybe we should never get involved with these countries to try to help" - I know many Americans think we are helping, but to those countries we are not helping, we are interfering, and we often make things worse.
Just try putting the shoe on the other foot for a second. Imagine that some foreign country decided that Bush is a tyrant, and it is time for regime change. Now imagine that country sending its troops in, killing people, perhaps even raping some women, and turning what once once a political disagreement into a bloody civil war between Republicans and Democrats! Well, that is exactly what America does. And not only in Iraq; it has done this in a number of countries.
Our "help" is not helping, it is destroying. We should try to fix our own problems, God knows we have plenty. And we should let others fix their own problems and stop trying to be Daddy. No one appreciates that, and we wouldn't either. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

People who put down Americans are either making generalisations which may or may not be justified, OR they are just ignorant. You Americans are about the nicest and most generous people anywhere. And the USA is built on great achievements of a great people.
But there are storm-clouds on the horizon.
I'm Australian, and to be honest, we GENERALLY know a lot more about the REAL world (ie, the rest of the world) over here than do most Americans. No, people aren't "jealous" of America's freedoms. In fact, I'm dismayed at the apparent BLINDNESS of American citizens to the LOSS of their freedoms! The USA (and the entire English-speaking Empire) is now definitely a Fascist Empire, where the CORPORATE interests have gained control of the respective governments. And the USA is only a hop and a step away from full-blown MILITANT Fascism - one or two more staged "attacks" like 911 will probably do the trick.
IMO the USA (and the UK and Oz) has no business being in Iraq or anywhere else in the Middle East. Iraq had nothing to do with any "terrorism" - and you'll find that your average Iranian (the next target on George Dubya's list) isn't jealous of American "freedoms" (like Iraq's new-found "freedom & democracy", American style???) NOR do they "hate" America - they are people just like anyone else, and just want to get on with their lives like anyone else, without being dragged into any Empire-sponsored mayhem.
The PROBLEM seems to be that the American media is so firmly under Fascist control that most Americans can't see the bigger picture that just about everyone else in the world has no trouble seeing. And the bigger picture is that George Dubya and his lunatic administration appears to be hell-bent on taking over the Middle East by fair means or foul.
There are some other comments in this topic which refer to the German adventures midway through the last century. Unfortunately, those observations are probably apt.

yeah, very well put! It is scary what's going on here. Those of us who DO see things as they are, we are often bashed and called "unpatriotic".. so the government itself doesn't even have to step in and shut us up, ordinary "patriotic" citizens do the job for them. Orwell himself couldn't have invented a more frightening dystopia.

It is plain and simple jealousy. A lot of these people just want Americans for their genorosity. When there is a world disaster Americans are always the first one to respond. After their country disaster is over, they start saying Americans are selfish etc. If Americans were so bad, why do we have such a huge immigrant population. How many of these people which they could live in America? Its all about envy.

Many people from all over the world come to live because they can set up businesses easy and plus they have a better opportunity in getting a good education. Many people look at America as being a financial and educational benefit only.I don't think it is all about jealousy. America is a good country but it has nothing on certain foreign countries that actually take care of its people. For example the poverty level in the America is high people still is poor and struggling and homeless. Welfare is like given a child allowances in America. America has so much power and money that really don't mean nothing because they don't take the time to really take care of its people. Yes people is on welfare and sometimes thats not by choice. But welfare is suppose to assist and what is considered welfare is not enough to even survive barely on.
Now just to take a look at foreign countries like Kuwait now that is a rich country, one kuwait dollar equals 3 american dollars, But they take good care of their people. Poor people in Kuwait aint poor. They get welfare and thats maybe like $800 a month.
My point is that America is not a country to be so jealous of. I am from the states born and raised in Philly. But just to have that name on your back "I am an American", so what. It don't mean jack. I don't walk around or think that I am better than any foreigner because I am American and they wish they would and they are jealous of my freedom. Because if you was to travel and see other places of the world you will see that America is not all top-notched and the really hold nothing compared to other countries. That have the same power as America have.
America needs to start taking care of the Americans and stop focusing on war and other non-sense things that take money from our land. America is really all that? Look they even make elderly people suffer, raise their health insurance or some elderly people can't even get certain medications because their health insurance issued by the government can't afford it. But they focus on gay marriages. So backwards. Elderly people can't even enjoy a good lifestyle after they have worked 50-6o years in the job force because their crummy check they get every month issued by the government isn't enough for crap. Sorry maybe I am wrong, but this is coming from an American, and I am not jealous. I proceed: They take away certain educational benefits from schools. And make our kids suffer. So do people really need to be jealous of US. I think not. Yes we do have the best doctors , the best hospitals, the best technology, Well not really because China, Japan is way better than Us. But I guess you can say we are second. But this is just my opinion. And with my opinion I may have shredded some light.
It's always two sides to everything. The political party tries to manipulate its people thinking that other foreign places wants to bring down America because America is land of the free and they want our freedom. No the foreigners maybe want the America to be tumbled to the ground because they are so tired of witnessing brutal attacks on their country by the so called American. How some people that represent America molest and rape women maybe because they are virgins and save themselves for their husbands and sodomized the men maybe because they are against gay relations. But this is what we don't see.
The news we see in America is often run by the government and produced in the way the news media want us Americans to see it. The news that people of foreign countries see is the news that are usually talking about the damages that have been caused by the American people so to speak. Their news is usually un editted and not produced by the governments image.
So if they have some type of hatred for the American land and its people its only because of what they hear and see and witness. I have talked to quite a few foreigners who may have a relative or friend in the America. They speak good about it and talk about hopes of getting to America one day.

Great post! You are absolutely right. American media has become a propaganda machine rivaling that of the former Soviet Union's; worse, actually, because in the Soviet Union at least everyone knew that the media lied, but here half the country thinks the media tells it like it is!
I hope other Americans open their eyes to this, and I hope foreigners will see that we are victims of the propaganda of our own government. I know, ignorance is not really an excuse, but it is an explanation.

Your prosper is not alone because of native amercians, they are lot of people from all over the world, who make this happen. And this kind of a bad impression is made by your leaders and as a dialogue goes like this in pearl harbor "we americans are made to think invincibles" which is very much true(only in imagination and not in reality) and there should be a total change in your attitude. Until then, you can't escape these kinds of comments.

Hey, don't believe everything you read here, sometimes they just do that to create debates or maybe an american offended them in some way. Just like what some actors do, they always compare British and Americans. Some would say that English people are more sensible and intelligent than Americans do but who can say that's the truth? Well, it is their opinion so they are entitled to it but you don't have to believe all that they are saying. I'm not an american but from all the foreign people that I've met here in my country, americans are the most friendly and respectful people compared to other nationalities. We all know that each nationalities has a good and bad people, it actually depends to one's character. So be happy you are an American!

Hi i am from India, firstly i have not seen any such remarks or post, but since you are saying , then there must be such remarks, thats really unfortunate(such remarks). Frankly speaking i am also a guy who doesnt like the US govt. policies, but not the kind who will put bad remarks about a nation.Actually i dont know how american are,so i am no one to comment on them. Also the feeling of dislike if any for your nation exists then its because of the govt. policies of war, and its attempt to have a say in others(countries) internal affairs.
Also one thing which hurt me was to hear that Indians in America were becoming targets of hate voilances after 9/11, thats really sad firstly because India is a peace loving country and have never went on a war unless its security was at threat by invaders,it is the country were Great Gandhiji was born-who inspired the likes of Martin Luther King n Nelson Mondela, so i just wanna tell all americans friends that please dont make Indians (for that matter anyone)the victims of your hate,we all are facing terrorism in our countries, the terrorists who kill people do not belong to any country ,and to kill a inocent person just because some one from his country is a terrorist is in itself an act of terrorism. Hope my post will make you guys in US understand us in India. I am also looking forward to making friends with all you guys (not only in US but all over the world).Lets us all learn to forgive and be friends and remove the evil of terrorism from the world,
Lets give peace a chance...

I think America is a great place and Americans are good people. I don't believe in nationalism though, so some of the patriotism is unsettling. Jealous of freedom, perhaps, but perhaps also angry at imperialistic tendencies. We have to realize that it is notus who are the tools of the government and mass media, but it is the other way around.
Education is key and a country started by brave and diverse immigrants with abundant natural resources is bound to prosper.
Again, the key here is people. Not a country. Either it's easy to wallow in the undeserved pride of a historically great country, or it's easy to turn against the sole superpower as a symbol of the injustice that is being 'permitted' in this world. Specifically, concerning America, it is not always there to lend a hand to others - it does what it can in the way that best benefits it.
But reaching out and communicating on a one to one basis to remove petty biases is important. So cheers to the internet, and to being a global citizen!

I think the American people are very nice and friendly. I have many good friends who live in USA.
The adverse impression on USA may lie in the politicians. It does not aim at American people. Some politicans have chosen the imperfect way when deal with some conflicts especially on religion. But I think it is not the idea of Amecrican peoole. I noticed that there are so many American people opposing the war in IRAQ.
well,have a good day!

I think the "manifest desinty" ideology and falmboyant capitalism that comes the expense of the less fortunate are two major sore points of Americans in the eyes of the rest of the world. Supposed on one hand there is freedom let countless many live in the shackles of povert, income assistance and/or homelessness. Not to say these aren't problems in other places but the USA seems particularly bad for not wanting to address the issues.
The other issues I believe arises in the USA attempting to impose its domestic laws on other countries abroad (not related to the USA) and their overuse of the war machine to achieve this end. That above everthing else probably leaves the most negative image of the American people.

People like you give people of other countries a reason to hate on us. "Jealous of our freedom." Right.
We are a power agressive country.
That said, some people just have blind hatred even when they shouldn't. Everyone should know that it always depends on the person (of course, if they're referring just to America, they are probably referring to the government's foreign policy).

I know what he means. By "people like you" he means those who feel America is superior. When you say that others are "jealous of our freedom" you give the impression of elitism and superiority (and snottyness).
Let me put it to you this way. Imagine a 13-year-old girl in junior high school who gets insulted by another girl... and her reply is "oh yeah? you're just jealous!" Does that sound mature? Well, that's how statements like yours sound to people in other countries.
