The young lady in question is 29 years old and a recent mother (soon to be single). Her father is deceased, her mother is still in the picture. I am looking to establish a relationship by which she and her daughter will be taken care of in the future (particularly should anything happen to her or myself). There is serious question as to whether the father would be appropriate as a caregiver. Could I adopt an adult and if so would it be the best way of ensuring that her daughter is taken care should something happen to her or that they are both taken care of should something happen to me. We have talked about this. I know it sounds crazy but ??????

I don't think you can adopt an adult but you could adopt the child. You could marry the mother (of course I am assuming you are male, if not then I apologize for this suggestion). You could list them both as your beneficiary. You could set up trust funds, buy stock in their name, get savings bonds or just start savings account for both of them.
I think if you talked to an accountant or lawyer they could probably give you some gret suggestions and help you get set up.
good luck and it is nice of you to want to take care of these two.

Its possible to become the power of attorney over them, but you would have to talk to a lawyer about this. I don't know the customs or laws where you are.

it sounds like you are just rying to be protective and to ensure that the child is taken care of in the future. there are no leagal documents that will allow you to adopt and adult.all you can do is help them to support them to make a better life.

Adopting a fully mature individual is rather strange and is not practical. That can never be called an adoption. It sounds you wanna help them but you can offer help in many ways.

You can't adopt her but you could set up some sort of financial help for her in the form of an annuity if you talk to a financial advisor if you'd want to do that.

Funds can be given to anyone you chose to...trust funds are a very good way to do this...
You can place a set amount into an account that will be administered by an attorney or by an accounting company with set amounts to be disperse 'in the event of'.
Consult with an attorney who should be able to guide you through and help you set up whatever you feel would satisfy this need.

Whoa, I've never heard of adopting someone that old before. Normally, when I or most people for that matter think of adoption, you think of kids, but this is okay too i guess.

Yes you can adopt an adult. I would check with your state's adoption law as to what steps need to be taken. As far as taking care of the child, you might want to see about adopting the child. If that is not an option you would do well to make a will/trust that includes the child and the mother.

well, you can't really adopt an adult, you know since they'll adults, but you can set up accounts or insurance plans or other financial plans in her name, meaning it will only be for her. you would have to do some reacherch on your own, maybe ask the banks or something. maybe just setting up a trust or something will help.
