our city is just small, and we live near downtown so its just near. Also, I'm a volunteer firefighter so I really would know and go directly to where fire is, thanks to the help of cellphones :)

That is wonderful. This kind of voluteer arrangements are not there in our country. People have to either inform police or firefighting stations. Thnaks for your discussion.

Thanks for your encouraging words. Let me run a news in a newspaper to get more support for this movement.

that's too bad, maybe you can start becoming a volunteer :) it just needs training, your local fire station might give you that :) and those who want to help will surely follow your footsteps. here in our country, poor or small communities who have no fire stations yet have volunteer members that train basic fire fighting techniques and help when there is fire. and you'll see that they're really into helping others

The idea of introducing this subject is to pay tributes to the our firefighters. Like armymen, these people devote their life for sake of others selflessly.

I know they risk their life for others one of my good friends os a fighter and I worry about him everyday it is good to know that people care enough about others to risk their own life

My nearest fire station is 3 miles away, the response is normally 8-10 minutes however they did take 14 for a fire alarm once at work (just round the corner from home)

That is quite pretty fast. There are places where it takes hours for the fireforce personnel to arrive.

One night I was returned from a movie and I saw a small petty shop was lit with fire. The shop has lots of footwear and the burning of leather was giving out bad smell. I went to nearest hotel and called the fire fighters and informed them about the fire that caught the shop. (There was no cell phone at that time). The hotel personnel refused politely to take the money for the phone call. By the time, I came out of the hotel to start my vehicle, I saw firefighting people were extinguishing the fire. What a samaritan people indeed. It was 1 a.m. The firefighters actually risk their lives to give life to others.

That is a very good question. I do not really know how far the firefighters are from my house. I just moved and I never thought about that. I do know that firefighters are very prompt and they will get here in no time no matter how far they are from here. They seem to always be ready for any hazard.

ssh, you wont believe. If we get a fire, by the time the firefighters come, we'd be gone. True. We have only one place for the entire city of Colombo and they are about 1 1/2 hrs away from where we live. So, may God help us.

That is true. But my sympathies are with fire fighters who have to work some times for 20 to 22 hours and without weekly holidays, taking the risk to their lives.

Our fire house is 3.5 miles fromour house. But my husband and myself are both firefighters, not saying that the two of us can put a house fire out but we can try to contain it to a part. We also leave our in ground pool full during the winter months because we don't have hydrants here the fire dept. can always drop a pump in our pool and pump the water out. Just remember if the door is hot DON'T open it!

I think that you should find out. Knowledge is power and I believe that if you know where it is you can have a better idea of which one is closer to you and which will be the best station to call.

well,i have shifted to new place and firefighters station is just 20 min far by walk.i think the loss happen due to lack of euquipment.most of the time they are very fast and try to reach as soon as possible.i can say they are faster than police.

It is better to know where it is located and also to know how quickly one can reach there. One cannot tell when we need their services.

We have a firefighter's station a mile away from my house. It's a straight shot too, so it wouldn't take them long at all to get here.

About a mile up the road. Very close to me, and I like that. Where I use to live they were about 20 miles away.
