Do you believe in Cold Fusion?

I want to discuss about cold fusion. Fleischmann and Pons tried to obtain this chemical reaction in 1989. Cold fusion is a nuclear fusion reaction that occurs at ambient temperature, two nuclei are forced to join togheter releasing energy. US investigated about their activity, sustaining that they were wrong and it was an impossible thing to do. All research were abandoned even if later in 2004 DoE (USA Department of Energy) observed an evidence of power that cannot be attributed to ordinary sources. Here in Italy where I live I know that someone is doing experiments too on similar nuclear reactions and I want you to know this site: http://www.frascati.enea.it/nhe/index-eng.htm They are doing calorimetric measurements to verify the excess of heat in reactions (=excess of energy produced from nuclear reaction!). They are obtaining new elements as Helium4 and they are finding transmutation from an element to another (they obtained Aurum too..the old alchimist dream!!). I think that there are many nuclear reactions to be investigated. I will give you this link too: http://www.rainews24.rai.it/ran24/inchieste/19102006_rapporto41-eng.asp it's an english page so all of you can read, there is a video too on the right of the screen with an interesting rapport Why government are not spending money in research for cold fusion? I've heard that 1 gram of deuterium can give dozen of watts for centuries! What do you think? I hope this is the future...I hope we will abandon hot fusion and petroleum and use only the new clean cold fusion!

Yes, I believe in it. However the ground reality is different. The Oil-producing/exporting countries will never allow research @ any level, until all of Oil is gone. I would say, we will have to wait around 20 years more. Not possible to break the vicious cycle before that...

U really think Oil-producing/exporting countries have the power to stop research??!!! Maybe U mean Halliburton & other oil companies ...

"two nuclei are forced to join togheter releasing energy.." Just can't get it, how to accomplish two nuclei to combine at room temperature? The positive result of the project page was last updated on Feb,2003. Probably this explains why it is not being funded.

well in a bomb its done by a fission reaction to push the two hydrogen atoms together in lab u think its impossible? well its not it has been done in the university of new jersey n in the european lab where they even produced 1.7 mn killowatts of power with it its done in a torus where very high powered laser beams n magnets compress the fuel atoms together n the heat doesnt even get in contact with the torus walls, the temperature inside reached three times that of the core of the sun but still its safe , in fact safer than fission reactions, the fuel deutrium is readily available in oceans n there is much less in reusable toxic waste so its perfect n just the type of energy source we need, the only problem is that these reactions r not continuous n r only momentary they r still financially not feasible but thats what they r working on if they getsuccessful in making them productive enough there will b a revolution i say

Wow, that's fascinating. I opened this thread initially because i thought it as about website traffic.Learn something new everyday!

LOL, no it's not a website traffic site, I've heard yesterday of this news, and I am interested in research like that!

ohhh....I'm happy you are a sincere girl, I will try to explain you something. Nuclear fusion the opposite reaction of Fission (that already we are using in nuclear reactors everywhere to produce energy...not here in Italy). Fission is when a heavier nucleum divide in two lighter nuclei, freeing energy in a form of heat. Fusion, the opposite thing, is when two nuclei are forced to join togheter. You can free up a lot of energy but it's very difficult to let them join togheter, because they are like magnets that rejects each one. Nuclear (hot) Fusion is what is happening in the SUN! You need million of degree to let them join togheter! Every material will melt if we try to do that on Earth...and it's very difficult to have it. There are projects too on hot fusion but they costs very much. Many scientist are sceptic about cold fusion..that is to obtain the same nuclear reaction at only 2-3000K, a lower temperature. To help them join togheter there are some catalyst elements that help reaction. I hope you will understand something now =)

Cold fusion & fusion is the same or different? I know there are Nuclear fission reactors & nuclear fusion reactors are in the making like the Russian 'Tokamak' nuclear fusion reactor.

Cold fusion is an underestimated thing for me. All scientists are working on "hot" fusion, building big Tokamak type reactors. They are very expensive and it's very difficult to obtain a continuative hot fusion reaction because you spend much energy to have a continuative one. The most important project about "hot fusion" instead is the ITER project, it's a very big tokamak larger 2-3 times than JET (the first experiment maybe where hot fusion was done). It will be built in Cadarache in southern France. They decided to build it on 28th June, 2005. You can see more of this experiment in their ufficial site: http://www.iter.org/ it will cost very much (158$ million per year average and in total $3760 Millions in 20 years!!) It will begin to work in 2016 maybe.... Instead cold fusion experiments are so inexpensive! It's a pity that many scientists are not interested in it ;( I hope that nuclear fusion will be a reality soon ..cold or hot :o)...because we need it to live our life as we know it now!

I believe private research is being done on cold fusion, the government may or may not sponsor it, but I'm sure the private sector has more of a hand in this than the public sector. There is also research in advancing deuterium, tritium and even antimatter power. The only problem is, the research and application is very expensive, into multiple billions (and more wide range applications requiring expenses into the trillions).

I have read about that in my comic books and I think that it can happen if the right people are on it.

I do not really know alot about cold fusions.. but here is an article I found you may like.. That I am sharing.. Take care, - DNatureofDTrain ---------------------- http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=7168 New proof that cold fusion works could fuel additional interest in generating power from low energy nuclear reactions -----------------------

I can't tell you if I believe in it or not, I don't know many things in this field ... but as you said let's hope it's possible or else we're really going to say goodbye to our modern life as there's no more enough oil & also because of all the pollution ...

pollution - manufactures poluindo the world
I wait that with this fusing let us can all diminish the world-wide pollution, that unhappyly harms not only to the country that manufactures it, but to the world.

ugh! what's with the 'I hope for the best' comments... with the world's depleting supply of fuels, not to mention the cost o such, both financial and environmental, cold fusion would be such a welcome relief. the movie "the saint" also tackles this experiment
