God is Benevolent and Omnipotent – how can he be both?

Recently I came across this very interesting discussion on God.
Most religious scriptures describe God as Benevolent (Kind, Caring, compassionate), and also as Omnipotent (all-powerful, invincible, unstoppable).
The world is full of suffering of all sorts, there is war, brutality, violence, loss, grief etc. So:
1. Is God just Benevolent and not Omnipotent? He sees all the suffering, grieves over it but can’t do much to change the situation.
2. Is God just Omnipotent and not Benevolent? He can remove all suffering but chooses not to do so, because he does not care.
How can he be both and the world still have so much suffering.

I hate this argument. DOnt get me wrong God's word says that he is kind and just, nut we're talking about the god that killed all but 8 people in the world with a flood. There's more scripture that talks about the wrath of God then there is that points to his love. So he can totally be both.

Well it is an alternative thinking, may be you are right.
GOD is a controller who has a bigger picture in mind and he ensures that world proceeds in that direction. Perhaps in that bigger picture we as individuals are not very important, but the whole world as one unit is of importance.

I like your topic but wants to add to yr discussion.......god take tests when violance, hatred, distrust, pesimistic approach start to flourish..........but when you pass those unseen tests ,only then then other side of the coin i.e Benevolence is visualised..........hope it gave you some clarity!!!!!!!!

Keep reading, hon.
The Scriptures also say that all questions will be answered when we meet our Maker. Don't try to understand. Have faith.
Maybe the best way to express what I am trying to say is that suffering is the yang to happiness' yen. There cannot be good without bad.
God has 3 faces: God the Father (omnipotent), God the Son (benevolent) and God the Holy Spirt (guardian and speaker).
This is where faith comes in. Either one believes or one doesn't.

I have to agree. It is not for us to question God and why He do things He does but we trust that He is in control and He let evrything work out for the better. There are things in life we wont understand but we believe God has a reason and that is called faith, otherwise God could have made us all robots and we would not have to have faith and all just do things with the press of a button.

Hi, this discussion is not about belif. I am a very religious person, and I firmle belive in god.
I am also very inquestive and seek answers to all riddles tha life throws at me. I am not questioning the existance of GOD. I am trying to seek explaination as to why GOD did not make his world perfect? Why did GOD let suffering be in his world?

Because all feelings we could possibly have would have to be possessed by God.

First of all change the picture It is typed Krishna whereas it is Sri Ram and Sita.
Regarding your question, you should read Gita, to why there is so much suffering and pain to human being.

Yes, I agree that God is both..As to an answer to your discussion, to me that lies in what you believe to be true, spiritually and religiously speaking.
When God sent Jesus to earth to die for us, his only begotten son, that must have been a very difficult thing for him to 'experience' as far as his love for Jesus~
But he also loved us enough to have put Jesus through such torture and torment on our behalf..
God encompasses all that we know and all that we do not know or could possibly conceive of. It is stated in the bible that we are 'made in his image', and that can be interpreted very easily, and then again, could mean many different things..But all this and so much more depends upon what you believe. The bible means squat to those who view it as simply a collection of books written by man alone, and at it's best, a book of history. Then there are those who beleive the bible was written by man under divine inspiration -man simply being the pen in God's hand-..And depending upon what you believe on the most vague and simple level, takes you to the next steps of your beliefs and the answers to so many questions, so many "Why's?" this world has..I believe God is everything good and all powerful, and other than the answers that can be found in the bible, the reasons behind the "Why's?" will be answered when his time comes to reveal such~

Compassion and suffering are both abundantly showered by God.The only difference is to its degree and as to who gets what in his share.
You are what you are to a certain extent, due to your previous actions, whether they are from this life or your previous life. This in addition to the culmination of your deeds at present influences, what you expeience, in the near future or later in life.
So, God basicaaly is only giving out results of your actions. Kindness in some form or the other for all your good ones and may be some sort of unhappiness caused to you for some wrong that you did.
Please allow him to be the judge because why's and therefore's are too complex for the human mind to understand.

that is the reason god is enigmatic...no point discussing abt sufferings as it is a relative term and it depends on more than 1 factor
