I suffer from sciatica on my right leg. Anyone suffering from the same ailment? What exercises do you do or what medicines help relieve your pain?

I am not sure if I have sciatica but if I stand up very long or lay on one side, my hips hurt horribly, it's not the muscle, it hurts inside the bone. I try to drink a lot of milk and go for long walks, that usually helps a bit, and also, if you do this exercise, you will feel SOOO much better, trust me. Stand with your feet crossed over the other (one ankle crossed over the other one). Gently and slowly bend downwards like you're trying to touch your toes, hold onto a table with one hand if you have to. It stretches out your hips a bit and it makes it feel better. I do this twice a day, once in the morning b/4 I get in my office chair and usually after lunch or after I get off work.

Thanks for your suggestions. However, I am not sure I can do the bending as I had a slipped disc operation last year. I do some gentle back exercises in bed only. Before my slipped disc was discovered (thru an MRI test), I thought my problem was on my right leg only. Like you, I had leg muscle pains when I stand or sit too long. You're quite young and your muscles may still be stronger, but you'd better take care of your back this early. Sometimes a slipped disc is caused merely by a wrong move in picking up things. Always bend your knees when you need to pick up something, especially heavy things. Again, thank you and take care ...

Most cases of sciatica can be effectively treated by physical therapy or massage therapy and appropriate changes in behavior and environment (for example cushioning, chair and desk height, exercise, stretching). Other conservative treatment options include anti-inflammatory medications (i.e. NSAIDs or oral steroids), pain medications, and epidural steroid injections (however the latter carries the risk of possible side effects and complications from the needle puncture and medications used). "Alternative" and "complementary" treatments include chiropractic manipulation which may give short term relief. Acupuncture has no effect beyond placebo in treating sciatica.
