hey im american ( not fat by the way lol) anyway i just came back from Australia and met a friend there. We ate at Mcdonald's ( they call it Maccas for short lol). And i asked her if they had a dollar menu. Where they sell food for just one dollar. but they didnt. I also discovered that here in america the cup we use for a medium soft drink...they use that same cup for a large in Australia. IS THIS WHY AMERICANS SO FAT? becuz we eat larger portions of everything? BEcuz we get more food for less money? becuz unhealthy food is way cheaper than healthy food? America's problem is we think" BIGGER = BETTER". for example our cars our food and now over-weight ppl are even saying they r better becuz they r fat! DOES ANYONE AGREE WITH THIS? or WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS ON THIS POINT?

My husband and I were just talking about this! Not only do we not have to get up to change the tv channels anymore, or hand wash dishes but it's getting worse. Now there is a machine that vacuum’s your house for you, just turn it on and let it go! Then there are groceries that you can place an online order with and they bring your purchase to your door! It's crazy! With the decrease in physical activities and an increase in junk food portions, we as a nation really are getting over weight.

That is very interesting, I didn't know that. It does make sense, and it gets worse and worse. Now not only can we get a hamburger, we can get a double, or even triple! Sad.

A few reasons stand out. Americans eat more fat – especially hydrogenated fat, polyunsaturated fat, and butter fat. They eat more sugar and artificial sweeteners than any other people on earth. Americans also experience more episodes of acute hunger each day than any other people on earth – many people eat 11 times a day. Americans also consume less fiber than any other nation. Americans consume less omega-3, an essential fatty acid, than any other nation.

americans faty - americans faty

Could it be this combination that is fattening up Americans? Perhaps the cause is not just one factor, but a combination of factors. Is America’s romance with fabricated foods killing her by degrees?

You said "Americans also experience more episodes of acute hunger each day than any other people on earth – many people eat 11 times a day." And you know this how? You are a 20 year old from India. If you are quoting, give your source. I don't know anyone in the USA that eats 11 times a day.

It's a combination of a couple of things. One, the portions are larger. And two, people here seem to think they can eat at McDonalds 3 times a day, 7 days a week and still be healthy.

Obesity is rampant in the US as it is also becoming a problem in Canada. Why? Because the portions at fast food places are way too big and at home there are always soft drinks loaded with sugar and chips and snacks loaded with fat.Do you ever look at other people's groceries at the checkout? People buy so much processed food, ready prepared meals and not much on the fresh side. Processed and packaged foods are expensive and loaded with sugar, salt and fat. North Americans also drive everywhere. It is particularly bad in some US cities. You cannot go anywhere without a car. I know, because I don't drive in other countries. I am too scared to have an accident. So to conclude, fat, salty and sugary foods and no excercise make people fat.

lol well said. but in some cities like nyc alot of ppl use public transportation n bikes alot because its so hard to find parking in the city and also because of the traffic. but i think thats absolutely right..about the processed food. its very unhealthy but maybe alot of ppl dont know that. we need more fresh food. thanks alot for ur input.

I agree with what you said in your posts as well as some of the previous comments. I especially agree with the fact that unhealthy food is cheaper than the healthy food. When I was struggling to pay for food, it was extremely hard to find vegetables and fruit that I could afford! But, I kinda disagree with Americans not doing physical work. Yes, most jobs now don't require people to work as hard, physically, as they did, say 100 years ago. But, many people still do a lot of physical work. However, people can get away with never doing any physical work more easily than they could 100 years ago. It used to be only the richest could do that.

Fast food and junk food itself is higher in calories than a healthy home-cooked meal is. And then we Americans feel the need to eat double-sized portions and order Super-Sized meals. Most Americans do this not once in a while, but several times each week, if not every single day. I don't think that it's because fast food is "cheap", in fact even the value menus can be expensive if you order double and triple portions. Americans just equate bigger and more with better. And to make matters worse, we don't even have to get out of our cars and walk into the restaurant- everybody has a drive-through now. An interesting thing is that we have several Thai restaurants in my city. I love Thai food, and have gone frequently. My friends and I comment every time that the portion sizes are so reasonable- much smaller than portions in other restaurants, yet you definitely get enough food to fill you up.

interesting point. but how much is the Thai food in comparison to a value menu? i bet its way more for a full meal than u'd pay for a $5 n change value menu.

I think the problem is most people do not know how to properly eat the correct food and portions. Plus just becasue you are thin it doesn't mean you are healthy, you can have malnutrition. I know people who eat well, work out and are still big. So not everyone is going to be a small size.

I think it is a combinationof a couple of things: First, I think most American eat fast food more than any other nation. There are virtualy hundreds of options on each corner of the city. Secondly, due to the busy lifestyles of most Americans they do not have the time to sit down with their families to enjoy home cooked meals. They are always on the run and eating out is move convienient.

I can't say anything about it, because I always thought Americans are the ones that are thin and try everyone around the world look like them. I mean look at the models america is producing every day. But if you want a statement about it, here it is. Here in Greece people are much more fatter than Americans, don't worry.

I have noticed this as well since i have a friend who moved here from america and she said that everything here is sooo small =) We do not have supersize menues and out large was like a small or maybe medium where she was from. It might be a contributing factor but also think that there is different things to consider. Had a friend that went as an aupair to america and all the family ate was precooked meals that they heated up in the oven or the microwave, these are not very good for you so she started cooking instead. the family imidiately started to loose weight. this might not be the thing in all families but i have seen documentarys and it seems as there are ALOT of precooked and fastfood thats beeing eaten...

I went on the Adkins diet a few years ago, (lost 60 lbs, too!). So I had to start fixing dinner every night at home so I could have low carb meals. I did not want the whole house on this diet, so I would fix them side dishes of mac n cheese or potatoes or something else with carbs. Do you know everyone of us lost weight? Near as I can figure, it was the lack of fast food that did it. Fast food places uses a lot of cheap fillers like sugars, fats and carbs so they can make more of a profit, IMO.

The BIG Gulp - Says it all.
The BIGGER= BETTER thing is definitely very american. You see this in everything that comes from the US. Except maybe microchips :| I also wonder if it has anything to do with the concept of getting "more value for money". That is, getting more for the same price you used to pay, everyone likes a good deal.

Americans are fat because the weather is cold and you have to eat enough food to keep you body warm. In tropical countries people are more skinny because they sweat more and the weather is hot so the metabolism is greater and can burn more body fat.
