What do you think of the current trend to sue everyone...

...over everything? I think a lot of it is people trying to make a lot of money as easily as possible. Most people know that if they sue a big company or a celebrity the case will probably be settled out of court, and they'll get a lot of money. It used to be that an accident was just that -- an accident. Now everyone is wanting to blame others for everything that happens. Like when a teen murders other teens, their parents sue the parents of the shooter, even though they had nothing to do with it. What do you think?

This is the main reason that insurance companies have the rates so high. Is this practiced all over the world?

I think it got to do with state of mind and marketing. Consumers' mind are programmed with aggressive marketing that this is the trend now. Bandwagon, everyone's doing it, I don't want to be left behind.
There is also the mindsetting of being aggressive to get what you deserve. The generation today is being taught by society to be independent, wise and strong. Gone are the days of shoulders shrugging off others mistakes. Mistakes... you must pay for it. Everything has a price.

Unfortunately, this aggressive, independent behavior is also spoiled and selfish behavior. I want what I want, and I don't care who I demolish to get my way. You make it sound like it's okay because that's the way things are now. Personally I think it's sad that people are only looking out for #1.

It's very scary to even have people over your house any more. If they stubbed their toe they might sue you. Our system is so easy to work this way. And a lot of people want something for nothing and this is the way to get it. I don't remember exactly what happened once, but one of my children got hurt at a friends house and another one of the kids (10-12 years old or something) asked me if I was going to sue... It really just blew me away that a kid was wanting us to sue someone for a minor accident.

I agree that it is pretty ridiculous. Someone drives with hot coffee on their lap and expects not to spill it, and sues McDonald's when it does. Sometimes people can't deal with their own stupidity and therefore need to find someone to blame for it. When you sue McDonald's over hot coffee, chances are the money you get is just a drop in the bucket for the huge company, so they'll be willing to settle out of court just to get you out of their way.
All these stories I ever hear about are from the United States, and I don't think this is the case anywhere else. You'd be laughed at if you tried a lot of these things in Chile and Taiwan. I know that from living in these places, but I don't know what the case is anywhere else.

Suing companies for their own mistakes is ridiculous! I have heard some wierd stories about people being sued. I would blame it on the lawyers because they find a loop hole in the law system and use it against the companies, they are ones who are money hungry and they know that if they win they would get a big chunk of money from their client. Cases like the famous hot coffee between the leg while driving, should be thrown out of the court. I still remember a case in London,UK where a thief broke into a house of a senior, in his late 70's, and broke his leg because it was dark and the resident was renovating his stairs and and the thief fell down. The thief sued the poor senior and won. How stupid is that? The judge should have thrown the case out and made the thief pay for the trouble the senior resident had to go through. If this was the situation in birth country both the lawyer and thief would have been thrown in jail for wasting the court's time.
There are incidents where big corporations are at fault and yes they should be sued. What people don't understand is that when you sue a company for silly reasons, it affects everyone.

I am so tired of all the lawsuits. It just seems like the thought for the day is..."somebody made me mad/hurt me, so I will make them pay...with money!" I think a lot more could be accomplished if people would start by treating others the way they would like to be treated. If we would think about how we would feel about something being said before we actually speak the words, it might help.
I guess a lot of people think money and revenge will make them happy. In reality, it doesn't give happiness, it only makes the people involved more miserable.

It has gotten way out of hand. I mean, really, sueing someone for spilling hot coffee on their lap is ridiculous! It just causes higher legal fees that cause problems for anyone with legitimate legal cases.

Forgive me before I start but I have an opinion which may not be liked by you. I think everyone has the right to sue as long as they are correct. If they are filing a false case then I strongly disagree about it. Thank you for giving me a chance here in your column.

I honestly think that sueing is out of hand. When you can sue over how hot a up of coffee was, it is awful. here are things that are legit but it makes it look bad on the ones that do deserve it.
We have some skateboarders that we keeprunning off of our property. They skateboard across our porch and jump off into a driveway about 4 ft. drop. We have asked the police what we can do and was told nothing. We can hang a no trespassing sign and if they are here and caught by the cops, they can fine them. If they get hurt on our property, we are responsible and could be sued. If we do anything to keep them off the porch and they get hurt, we could be in bigger trouble. Can you believe it?

I agree, people are sue happy and it is a shame. Just the other week one of my tenants and another of my tenants had an accident. You would not believe the number of lawyers who sent her information trying to get her to sue her neighbor. Someone made a mistake, they had insurance, why sue someone. I dated a guy once who was in a car accident, he was hit head on by a teenage driver. He ended up getting over $120,000 from this. It did end his hockey career and mess him up in some ways, but he blew the whole wad in less than 6 months. In my line of work, I have people call all the time and anytime I say something true, but they may not like it, they mention lawyers. People need to get a grip and work for their money. I do.

Seems like everyone is sue crazy. If you bump into someone, they think they can sue you for it!
I can see sueing the parents of a teen shooter. IMO how could his parents NOT have seen it coming? Kids that kill aren't sweet well behaved kids with no tell tail signs they are nuts. I think parents need to start being held more accountable for their children than they are. Too many parents shove their kids out the front door now a days and let the street raise them. Seems like the only way to get people attention, is to hit their wallet. Sad really, but that's reality for ya.

I used to beleive that, and then I read how in the US there is no form of income coverage for people who have to spend time off work due to injury. So not only do people have to pay inflated medical bills, but they have no income while they are being treated.
Add that to the fact that many medical insurance companies will not cover your bills in case of injury unless you sue somebody.
So I no longer think that people are selfish or money-hungry. I think they are desperate. The system is designed to leave the person who can least afford it holding the bag - UNLESS they sue.

I think too many people in the world are greedy. There are of course situations and circumstances when it's expected and very right that a person sues. But it seems more and more people are suing over ever little thing. Some people are habitual suers. I believe if you examine the cases where a person has sued over something really stupid, that person has probably sued many people. The system needs an upgrade, LOL

I was talking about an aspect of this the other day with somebody I grew up with. Back in the late fifties, early sixties we had a field here in our town called the polo field (used to play polo on it). Anyway, all the kids in the town went there in the summer. We had sports, games, crafts, schoolreading lists - everything you could think of and the township footed the bill. Teachers took summer jobs watching us. Sometimes a kid would get hurt and their parents would be brought to the hospital to okay stitchs or a cast but no parent EVER sued the township because their child got hurt. We were not so litigous a society back then. Can you imagine that today? The really sad part is that many more families are two income households and they need a supervised place for kids to go much more now than they did back then.
