How long does a pet fish usually live?

I have had a pet fish since 2003,he's been in the tank alone for all this time and I am just so amused that he is still alive. Whats the average life span of gold pet fishes?

I know carp can live to a very advanced old age, but I really don't know about goldfish. I have a vague feeling that about 6 is their limit, but I'm not sure whether that is indeed true. Even thre years sounds like a good lifespan for such a small fish!
