How did the whole "Dumb Blonde" stereotype begin?

I found this on the Internet: "The dumb blonde of the fifties is said to have been invented by Hollywood as a response to WWII." Why a blonde and not a brunette? I would guess because of the other two blonde stereotypes: "Blondes know how to have fun" and "gentlemen prefer blondes."

Maybe the blonds brought it on themselves. Some of them are really air heads and stuff. They act dumb too, they make me wonder sometimes.
