Ok, as much as I hate to admit that I "occassionally" make mistakes, I have to relate this story.
Last week Gaylene and I drove to the mountains for a little recreation. The roads were slick and somewhat greasy in spots. However, I have driven this same road at least 1,000 times before....no exaggeration here. Also, I drive one of the most reliabe and roadworthy cars on the road, a Mercedes E320.
Well, anyone who knows me, even remotely, from MyLot should know that I am "pretty much" a "Know-it-all"....at least I was up until last week.
As we were coming down the mountain, at around 70 miles per hour in a 30 mile per hour zone, I had just rounded a left curve and was preparing for a right curve; suddenly the back end started shifting to the right and the next thing I know we were going backwards in the opposite lane!
Gaylene started screaming, I hit the breaks, and we kept going. I assumed we would stop in the other lane heading in the other direction from which we had just came. NO SUCH LUCK! Thank GOD there were on on-coming vehicles as we entered the opposite lane!
We continued off the shoulder, up a small embankment, and were headed down a 300' ravine...backwards! Suddenly we were jolted to a dead-stop when the rear-end hit a small tree.
By the time we were stopped, two opposing tires were off the ground and the other two were buried in snow and dirt! We were literally hanging by a thin tree limb 300' above the bottom of the ravine!
It was 9:45PM, dark, and bitter cold. Several people stopped to assist, but we were too far over the edge and stuck for anything except a tow truck to help. Gaylene staggered, crying, from the car. In a matter of minutes she was shivering from the bitter cold and half in shock.
What amazes me, in addition to not going over the edge, is the number of people who DIDN'T STOP! Even those in BIG pickups that might have been able to help.
So now you now: I'm not as big of a Know-it-all as I used to think I was.
We drove up there again last night to see where we almost went over the edge. It was even scarier seeing it for the second time around! This time we drove the 4x4 Ranger! I'm not driving the Mercedes again for a while! And, from now on....I'm obeying the speed limit signs....on mountain roads!

Yes you better obey the speed limit sounds like that was a close call. I don't blame you. I wouldn't drive the Mercdes for a while either, Be more careful and slow down! Gaylene that must be your girl? Don't scare her like that anymore! You all have a Merry Christmas!

I'm glad the two of you are okay. I've never been through anything like that. I can only imagine what the two of you must have felt like. It must of been terrifying to know that your lives were at the mercy of the elements. Slow down and obey the speed limit. It'd be ashame to lose you.

I am glad you didn't kill you or Gaylene, you provide too much entertainment here on Mylot. I was in a bad wreck a few years ago, it is really scary. I was trapped in the car, the firemen had to use the jaws of life to get me out. I hope you and Gaylene have a very Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year.

Thank you, Polly! I'm glad you survived, too!
Actually, neither of us had a scratch on us, and the ONLY damage to the car is a small black smudge from the tree along the bottom of the rear bumper! That can probably be rubbed out!
The most damage done that night was to my ego! I always thought I could drive as fast as I want, regardless of weather or posted speed limits! Guess I was wrong!

Sometimes it takes something like that to happen to kind of wake you up to things. Thankfully no one was hurt, and I agree that more people should have stopped to help. I'm sure they wouldn't appreciate it if it was their family stuck down there. It was a very unfortunate incident, and I'm glad y'all are ok. And I'm glad to hear you'll be a little more careful. Merry Christmas to both of you. I know you both have a lot to be thankful for.

Chalk it up to lesson learned, huh? I'm glad you and Gaylene are ok. Imagine all the people at MyLot fighting over who gets to take care of Chunkers. Of course, he can always come and live with the 3 legged Katie!

Chunkers, are you maybe part cat!! You have 8 lives left? Glad you made it through ok, take it as a lesson and BE MORE CAREFUL in the future. Even a four wheel drive can lose control if you drive too fast. Never hit the brakes when you start sliding, you just have to let the gas and brakes go and steer through it.

that is alesson for you.just because you think you know a road does not mean you should not obey the speed limit.luckily it did not turn into tradgedy let this be a lesson to you.next time you will think and be careful.if i was you i would rather obey the speed limits rather than go faster and put people at risk.thank god you and your partner were not hurt.next time think mr.know it all well you use to be.lol.

Oh my goodness! I'm so glad you and Gaylene are okay. That must have been so scary. God was on your side, definitely! I've gotten into minor car accidents before, but none of them were like that...my heart's beating wildly after finishing this post! Phew. Close call.

Hungh! I just would not like to be the hair whose breadth you were away from you both getting made into another statistic!
I don't know if you are boasting about 70mph in a 30mph zone or just telling the bitter truth (I suspect the latter). You now get to hear all the curses and 'bloody fool' things that other drivers have shouted at you all these years.
I'm especially glad that you did not kill anyone in the opposite lane. I'm also glad you went to check it out the next day but I do have to confess I'm a little sorry that your Merc was only scratched. You deserved to have totalled it.
I suppose the best thing is that Chunkers still has a master and a mistress.

Well I thank god that you are safe because if you weren't I would be sad because then I could not laugh at all the crazy things you write on mylot. So thank you god for sparring Chunkers and Gaylene and teaching Chunkers a lesson that we know he has learned from.

God says "You're Welcome. But stop contributing to Chunker's deliquency by laughing at his posts!"
There you have it, in His own words! Stop laughing at me...all you do is encourage my bad behavior! lol
Thanks for the compliment. I hope to be around a long time to give y'all something to laugh about!

We are glad you are still with us. I once saw where a semi went off of Eagle Pass, in the Appalachians. I hope Gaylene is still on riding terms with you. Again, I am glad you lived to share your lesson with the rest of us. Makes me shiver to think. All I did in the way of scary last week was to allow myself to run out of gas on the hiway in the middle of nowhere, at about the same time of night. Again, many people failed to stop. Someone did, let me use the cell, and my visiting son in law came and rescued me.I am sorry so few people were willing to stop. What does that say about us? Do we always offer help when we can? May you have an expecially rich Christmas in terms of loved ones and time spent together.

LOL..that's good, still on riding terms with him. I am afraid, I am very traffic shy and its hard to get me on the road for any reason, let alone on an icy one. I don't drive, and it's reasons like these, that I don't. Consider me a real chicken chit.
