Why does my dog bite his own tail and now he's got a wound on it?

I don't know whats wrong with him but he's also losing alot of weight? He use to eat his dog food all the time but now he hardly eats anything except a really good steak or something. I'm worried about him and I can't take him to the vet because I dont have any insurance for him. Should I give him some vicodin or something

First, make sure it is REALLY HIM DOING THE BITING. Next, go get some LARD, not shortening, put some in a frying pan and melt it, then add some dry bread to it and fry it. Allow to cool and serve it to him. This usually works with finicky eaters. If it does work, try doing the same thing with a good brand of dry dog food. Another thing you can do is put some dry CAT FOOD in with the dog food. Good luck.

Firstly no on the vicodin - people medicine should never be given to animals.
You mention that you only give him steak - while I don't know the exact explanation and in truth probably only a vet can answer it - the build up of protein in his body (through the steak) could possibly be causing a reaction, maybe a heat type thing.
I'd suggest trying other foods - if he's hungry enough he'll probably eat it. As for the wound on his tail, if it's bad you are going to need to get it treated, but you will need to find an ointment etc that is suitable for animals.

He's a mix breed pitbul. My dog is about 4 years old and he usually never had problems with his tail, now the wound is like 4 to 5 inches wide. Its like a big circle on top of his back where his tail connects. It looks nasty. I also have a little chihuahua and he's starting to have the same problem with his tail also but not as bad. These are outdoor dogs. My chihuaha is about 14 years old and he's been eating human food almost all his life and he never had problems. So I don't think its the steak thats hurting my dogs. I notice he's getting really skinny. (the Pitt). I will try some ointment

Maybe he has ticks, flies or something on his tail that needs to be taken care off.
