Breathing. It may sound funny but its the truth. Knowing when to breathe and how to breathe properly makes all the differnece in how a song sounds. our choir direvtor actually hired a breathing instructer for us one time.

voice quality and expression should always go together. Even how high the pitch you can reach then it's nothing if you don't know how to give the right expression for the song.

Actually, aside from the right breathing technique, a lot of things go into singing. Vocal quality is one. Dynamics is also another ( how you render a song , like when you need to soften your voice or when you give the song impact, etc.).

Apart from all those mentioned above by others, I'd like to add one more which I think is AS important. To sing with all your heart, to sing for yourself, to make yourself happy and not for others. COz I think when you sing just for the sake of singing it really does reflect on your singing. No matter how great a singer you are, if you don't enjoy that, if you are doing it for others, i believe you aint even half as good as someone singing out on top of the voice in the shower...coz at that that is true, this aint. Let it come from inside..that would make any song sound good

I won't say voice quality is a must, as it is sumthing you have and you cannot develop upon it. What you have, u have. Expressions do matter a lot. The confidence level also matters. If you are nervous, you wont b able to xpress yourself yourself fully. Stage presence is another factor. Sur taal, according to me, come after all these factors. A performer with good voice and confidence stage presence, having okay kinda sur-taal can do very well.

The first most important thing in singing is stage presence. You must look confident and look like you enjoy what you are doing.
The second mots important thing is engaging your audience, most male perfomeers walk up to people in the crowd especially older women and sing a line or two of their song to them to make the lady feel special.
In terms of voice quality stay within your vocal range.
most men are either tenor or bass.
Do not stretch your voice uncomfortably, it is very uncomfortable for people to listen to. When singing long notes take a pause in the songe where you can take a subtle deep breath before you sing your long notes. It sounds more polished that way and more professional and strong.
