Police Officer hurt in the line of duty

My husband of 10 years got hurt in the line of duty as a jailer here in Dallas County (Dallas, Texas) in 1998. He has been medically disabled. The sheriffs dept has treated him and my family horrible. They never once called or came by to see how he was doing. He has undergone 21+ major surgeries on his neck and back. He ran out of his workers comp money about 8 months ago. It is sad how the sheriffs dept can show all kinds of respect when an officer is killed but if someone is hurt permanently or temporarily they do not care. They just sit there and fight you on everything from medications to your pay. Has anyone else witnessed this in their area?

i'm so sorry to hear that! that's so unfair and it shows you the reality in life...that people only start to mourn and recall all the good deed who perish while on duty..but they dont have any care for those who are disabled ...that's really unfair! im so sorry that you and your family have to go through all that! Take Care!

I am sorry for the issue that your and your family is going through as a result of his injury. Yes, I knew a lady officer that was hurt in the line of duty and the Police Department treatedher poorly after being injured. I have quite a few other Police Officers in my family that I hope never got through this. You are right, though, it seems to be a more attractive situation if an officer is killed than injured. Please thank your husband for his hard work and dedication to protect and serve the people for me. Let him know that we, as citizens, all appreciate his sacrifice and are truly sorry to have one less officer to protect us. God bless you and your family.

I've been reading through this discussion and am sickened by how you and your husband have been treated. This is a disgrace and a really poor commentary on our society's values. People sue for and are compensated for trivial things these days, and then someone who was hurt while working a job which keeps society safe, and on top of that was trying to save the life of another officer in trouble, is treated like this- it's a crime. And then add on the fact that the jail was obviously negligent by not having "wet floor" signs on a freshly mopped floor (isn't it a law that these signs have to be displayed in the workplace, by the way?). This definitely has LAWSUIT written all over it, and I think that you should consult with a good attorney. Obviously the Dallas County Correctional system has no intentions of owning up to their responsibility in this matter, and they are certainly not helping you financially or even emotionally. They were clearly negligent in causing this accident, and it is just plain wrong that they can get away with not taking the financial responsibility for it.
I'm not surprised that the media didn't want to get involved; they were probably afraid of rocking the boat with the county government. Please consult with an attorney and get the process started. It doesn't hurt to consult with the lawyer, and then make the decision about whether or not to go ahead with the suit. Discuss your concerns about your husband's ongoing medical care with the lawyer; I'm sure that he will assure you that his medical care will not be affected by a lawsuit, if that's what you're worried about.
I will visit your website; I'm sure that you've had benefits for financial assistance, haven't you? My prayers are with you and your husband, and I hope that you actively pursue getting the justice that you both deserve.

Thank you for your thoughts, concerns. We have an attorney that is assisting us with some of the things like the medications. Thank you for checking out the website. We are relying on the website to help bring in finances since my husband doesn't get workers comp anymore. We have worked with a few non-profit organizations to help us out with bills. Thanks to these non-profit org. we want to start one as well so we can help others but are at the VERY beginning stages of getting finances/grants to start it up.

This is a terrible situation...which I hate to hear about. Being from a law enforcement family I can honestly feel for you. On the other had...I may be wrong but being injured in the line of duty and the department cutting off funds/medical to the officer seems almost unheard-of at least within our agency. I would definately start writing some letters to your legistlatures and other town/city/state officials. Seems to me that this is just wrong wrong wrong!

I am sorry to here that it is not right if you are hurt while working he should have comp or disablity for the rest of his life your family should not have to suffer, and that fact that they are acting like nothing has happen to a follow officer is even worse. I have seen on TV in our state they do make a big deal out of it which they should these people help protect us. I wish your family the best.

You hear lots of stories about cops "taking care of their own" or cops banding together to help their own, so this is a surprise and certainly unfortunate and tragic for you and your family! Your husband gave his all for his job and should be taken care of.

Thank u. Very few take care of their own. It is also the higher up authorities that do most of this and they scare the other officers to not say anything or do anything to be on your side. So the other officers are scared to join you.

I haven't witnessed it personalyy, but as a Dallas resident, I know that our DPD is one of the worst in the U.S. From crooked cops to trying to cover deaths of inmates, to exactly what you are talking about, I've heard all, seen all, became educated on all. I can truly say that I have seen a little difference since Kunkle took over. Hopefully alot will change in the department, both outside and inside those walls.

Thank you for responding. DPD does have a bad reputation and it is getting worse. Their new system is what causes the deaths to be covered and inmates to stay in jail longer then they need to.

The dept does pay his medical for the rest of his life but they fight him and the doctors all the time. He gets his medication that he has been taking for 8 years denied and then the medical company refuses to pay the doctors trying to get them to stop treating him. When we get the finances to try to fight we will but right now we don't have the finances or energy (after fighting them for 8 years) to do it at this time. Thank you for the kind words.

Thank you for your write back. Good luck with the firefighter career. You can talk to those who have been working there to see how they are treated and/or check online to see if any firefighters have been injured in your area and getting treated poorly. Again good luck to you.

It is really unfair, and hopefully things will get better. But I'm sure in their minds all they see is that it is costing them money. I know it is horrible, but people have lost all compassion now a days. Hope things do get better. Happy Holidays.

WE see the results fot he attitudes you are talkig about when we see the number of lawyers making a living off this same kind of treatment. I am really sorry that you are expeirencing this hardship, but is sounds like you might have to get really aggressive to get that permanent disacility money coming in the way it rightfully should!

Thank you for your comment. It is unfair and we do fight as hard as we can. But after awhile it gets tiring and frustrating because they fight with us so much that they want us to give up and drop it but we won't.

I don't know how these things are in my area, but I truly feel for you and your family. It is totally unfair that they would treat one of their own like that, especially when he was hurt in the line of duty. It is a very sad thing. I wish you all the best and hope that things work out for you.

I have heard such sad things happened in my country. I feel it is injustice to make these things happen. Maybe I have something to suggest. If you forward the complain to the person in charge but still no action taken, may be you can go through an NGO (non profit organization) who does charity work on human rights. You can check your local NGOs to see if they are available. If everything seems to fail, I think you can you to one of the mass media (in my place the TV is helping a lot of grievances from public) and voice out your situation. I hope this suggestion helps. Thank you.

I appreciate your ideas. We have gone to the person in charge and it did not get us anywhere but have them treat us worse. My husband is working to get a list of those that have been treated like he has and then go to the media because more then one person speaking about it will make it more powerful. Heck the police dept is known for making so many mistakes with their computer system. They have arrested people for crimes they did not do and the dept did not have proof they did it. They have proven that their new system has lost inmates in the system and not pointed out those that were ready for parole.

I have not been a witness to this in my area. However, I have been a witness to very dissappointing behavior of my local Police Departments.
It seems that whenever I have an opportunity to interact with law enforcement officers, they always leave me a bit worried about how our departments are run.
I don't believe that there is an intentional disregard for professionalism, I just think that these dapartments are poorly run and officers poorly trained.
I am not suprised at all to hear of your situation and I wish the best for you and your family. Don't expect any help from the Police department, I don't.

Thank you for your comment. It is real hard to file suit against them because they like to fight and use their money and ours as much as they can.
