Crocheting is becoming a thing of the past

Have you noticed that not many people crochet anymore? I learned how to crochet from my Gramma and have taught all 4 of my children to crochet. Luckily, they love it! Of cource there are still many things about crocheting that I am learning or wanting to learn. But I know enough to make a beautiful blanket, hand towels, and a few other items. I could also teach a little as well. If there is anyone wanting to learn, I would be happy to share as much as I can!

Really? I hardly see anyone crochet anymore unless they are elderly people. Knitting is something that I want to learn. But unfortunely for me, no one in my family knits.

Yeah seriously, tons of younger people are knitting and crocheting, all sorts of young people, I learned from friends not even from family members All sorts of hip, new trends in knitting are poping up, also in crocheting... things that would worry the pants of those knitting grandmas : )

I had no idea. That is great though. I'd hate to see a great hobby like crocheting and knitting die off. There are so many wonderful and beautiful things you can make. Thank you so much for letting me know this!

Crocheting is bigger than ever, especially with amigurumi done in spiral crochet and freeform crochet growing like wildfire. I think blogging has really helped to push the knitting and blogging and indeed all crafts back into the forefront.

Do you know of a site online that teaches knitting? That is one of the few crafts that I can't do yet. I want to learn and so do my kids, but unfortunately, I have no one to teach me. Of course, I'm not good at reading patterns either. I learn by step by step pictures or some one showing me. :-)

I did that and tried to teach myself to knit last night. It didn't go so well.

Let me try that again. I think blogging has really helped the popularity of knitting and crocheting. You no longer have to wait for a teacher or a friend to show you how now that we have the internet.

I agree with response #1, knitting and crocheting are really big right now, especially among young people. I've alctually seen small children doing work in yarn. It's cute to see them with their projects. Some of them are quite good, too.

That is so wonderful! I love to watch my kids make stuff! My oldest told me that when I learn to knit she wants me to teach her. Now if I could just learn...

There is a show on DIY network called Knitty Gritty and it's all about knitting. You can also go to the website DIYnetwork.com and download some of the tutorials to help learn to knit. It's all free and rather easy to follow. Good luck!

Crochet did die out for a while just like knitting did, but i've noticed in the wool shops and magazines that it's making a come back. I used to crochet and stopped for awhile, i want to start again but can't seem to remember how to even get started again. I'm making it on of my new years resolutions to teach myself how to crochet again. My mum is a good knitter but can't crochet. so if you have any tips for a re beginner please pass them on.

Once you get started again it should come back to you. Start with chains then go from there. Wal-mart has a book call I Taught Myself To Crochet. It comes with crocheting needles. A great book to get! Shows you step by step how to do the stitches. Hope that helped at least some. :-)

i can remember how to make the chains but i'm not quite sure what the stitch is called but it reminds me of almost like a shell stitch. then you use it in squares, i just can't find a pattern in here for it. any suggestions if you know what i'm talking about.

take her advise. you'll catch on again really fast. Remember it's like riding a bike you think you've forgotten how to do it, but it comes right back to you as soon as you start it up again. Trust me, I put it down for years and then picked it up again and it was second nature for me.

I seriously love to crochet. I bring it with me to alot of places (doctor's office, etc). But sometimes I feel like there are people looking at me like I'm doing something criminal, because it's" what their grandma used to do". But you know I still love it. In fact in the morning I have to go and get the tires on my car replaced (it's been way past time and so now it's an obligation) and I plan on bringing my project with me. Look as they may, I really don't care :)

I know what you mean! I use to work over nights and I would take my crocheting to work with me so I could work on my projects during breaks and lunch and so many people would look at me as if I had lost my mind. But when they saw the finished project they would tell me how pretty it was and how they wish they could do that. I'd offer to show them how and they'd say things like oh I don't have time. I say let them look! :-)

My husband is wanting to learn. He can probably crochet as many times as he has seen me show my girls. LOL He says he want to learn to knit with me too. I think mostly for support, but its sweet!

I agree 100%. Let em look. If they really wanted to learn they would actually take the time to learn it. It's SOOOO easy I can't understand who wouldn't want to. But yet my husband doesn't even want to learn. It's funny I keep bugging him. I say "I'm making this for YOU, so why don't you try to at least put 2 stitches in it so that you can say YOU HELPED!!!!!" He doesn't go for that. It's to GIRLY for him. I married a macho man LOL!!!!!

I've noticed that too---it amazes me really. I LOVE to crochet, (especially when it's cold, like now!). I taught my oldest daughter how to crochet. My younger daughter was a leftie & just wasn't interested either. I think its great that you taught your children to crochet. It's an art and a craft, so fulfilling when you get a project done. I've given away so many crochet projects and they are still being used, which is what it is intended for. I make mainly blankets & sweaters. Lately I've been making a LOT of baby blankets. Everyone I work with or know is pregnant or knows someone who is pregnant. Crocheting relaxes me too, great after a stressful day at work.

My kids love it! It seems that lately all I've been making is baby blankets too! I'd like to crochet something like a sweater or hat, but I have a hard time following patterns.

I know how to knit and crochet. But, for some reason, I just can't get into crocheting. I love to knit and I am current working on a knitted afghan for my bed.

I love to crochet. Want to know how to knit. That would be neat. I'm working on a baby blanket right now. I have a design in my mind that I'm going to try. Hopefully it will turn out good.

I have been crocheting since I was young too. My mother taught me and I still love it. It definitely is not as popular as, say, knitting, but I don't think it's a "lost art" yet, thank heavens. I would actually love to know how to knit as well but I haven't mastered it yet. I think as long as there are some of us out there who love to crochet, then it won't go away.

I am very glad it isn't a lost art. There are so many wonderful and beautiful things you can make! I'm going to try to find a website or something that will help me learn to knit. That is one thing that I don't know how to do and my kids want to learn as well.

There will always be someone who does what they want to in spite of adversity. I'd be such a person who crochets as long as I'm able. It is relaxing to me, and I like to be productive, even if in a small way.

I completely agree. There's nothing quite like sitting down and creating something!I've yet to make anything major, but I still enjoy it. I'm still trying to learn how to read patterns!

I started crocheting when I was 11 years old, just learning to do a simple chain stitch. I remember that the first one I made was like a mile long and ended up being thrown in the trash because I had no idea what to do with it. As I got older, I started learning more and more. I made my first blanket when I was 21 because I fell down the stairs and bruised my tailbone and was laid up for a while and needed soemthing to do. Now, I make all sorts of things, even sweaters! I love crocheting and hope to god that it never becomes a forgotten art.

My first was a long chain too. I kept that thing for a long time. I was so proud of it. Then I started learning the other stitched and how to make blankets. I believe thats when I finally got rid of the long chain. hehehe My kids did the same thing. I just smiled at them and thought about when I was a kid and first learned. :-)

well I am one and my best friend is another one that does love to crochet, we enjoy it more than knitting actually and it looks a lot prettier, so keep crocheting away as it is a very good excercise for our hands and keeps our minds relaxed.

Actually it is a very good exercise for your hands and your wrists. And even if it wasn't, I would still continue to crochet!

I love to crochet. My mom tought me how when I was very little, along with knitting and sewing/cross stitch. I remember she would make these cards out of cardboard and punch holes in them for me to sew with a big piece of yarn and a needle. I dont know how many yards of crochet chain I made, but it was lots. As a matter of fact, I made a date with her this coming weekend to learn to tat, which is the only thing she never took the time to show me. I never got into any of it beyond the basics, and after about the age of 10 I stopped doing any of it completely. It wasn't but a few months ago that I took up crochet again. I have made several hats and scarfs and even a few shrugs for gifts this Christmas. I tought my son to crochet, and just like me there is yards and yards of chain. Great job keeping this hobby alive!

I never did get the hang of sewing. And I have no idea how to tat. I'm learning to knit. My daughter asked me to teach her to knit once I get it down to a tea. All we have to do to keep it alive is teach our children and just hope that they teach theirs and so on. And for those that get lucky enough to be able to teach grand children or even great grand children. :-)

I have crocheted when I was a teen and early 20's nothing major though. Mostly just doileys. I am very interested in learning more and to get back into crocheting. Now that my children are grown, I have more time to do these lost arts. Can you publish an article with your directions to the blanket? I would love to make one. Do you have pictures? I am just new to mylots and have a hard time finding quality articles yet so if we could connet as frieds, I think I will be alerted when you post a new article.

Well, with the blankets I make I just combine different stitches. For instance, I crocheted a baby blanket for my husband's mom(no, she didn't have a baby, but a baby doll. What I did was started out with a chain. About 3 foot long, maybe longer. The next row was done in single stitch, the next in double stitch, and the third in triple stitch. Then I just repeated the rows until it was the length I wanted. I'm making one now where I'm making small granny squares. and then I'm going to making stips using single and double stitch. I'll be connecting the squares to the strips. I'm not real good with following patterns so I just make them up as I go.

I agree with what others said--knitting and crocheting are very "in" right now. I have met many people my age (20s-30s) that do one or the other or both and many high school kids (boys and girls) are learning. I taught myself to knit in 2004 and taught myself to crochet in 2005. I love to do both and have made all kinds of sweaters for my baby and friends' babies. My kids want to learn, too. My oldest is 6 and I think I might start teaching her next year. My son is really interested in it but he is only 5 and doesn't have the patience yet. I already let my 4 year old daughter have a crochet hook and her own yarn and she pretends to "knittle" (as she calls it). Hopefully all will learn before they are 10. I like to crochet the best because stuff goes so fast. Right now, though, I am knitting a sweater for the baby.

Sweaters is what I want to learn to knit and crochet but I'm just learning how to knit and I'm not real good at reading patterns. Hopefully one day I'll be able to make a sweater or two.

My grandmother taught me to crochet also. My mother crochets quite a bit. I've made a few afghans, but in the past 10 years or so, my attention span has decreased a lot. If I can't see progress really fast, I get bored. I can't spend several weeks making something anymore...I want quicker results!

I understand what you mean. Crocheting is my safe haven. When I'm really stressed out or in a bad mood I just pick up some yarn and just start making something. It can take awhile to make things, but when you are done, the beauty that you created is worth it. At least to me it is.
