Energy Conservation at Home

Do you practice energy conservation at home? Could you share with everyone what you do? Mine: I switch off lights and just about anything else when not needed, switch off the tv when nothing's worth watching, schedule my ironing and segregate then just fold neatly clothes that don't really need to be ironed, minimize using airconditioners or electric fans. That's all I can remember for now.

Well I do better than that. I don't have television, Have candles, no electric lights. No Air conditioning, no fans. Only energy I have is a log fire in the winter. In fact I use up so much energy when chopping up logs, that I lose weight plus get warm at the same time. I also have Cavity wall insulation in my Cavity walls, which keeps out the cold in the winter and keeps out the heat in the summer.

I also take care of the conservation of energy. Switch off the TV from main switch because much electricity is consumed in Standby mode, also. Try to use solar based equipments because it's the main and unlimited source of energy.

solar and wind powered home energy center - energy conservation is quite the thing to do, eventually it will the norm and that will be a wonderful sight to see
We have a solar and wind powered home so we live within nature. When the batteries are registering full that is when I do my laundry, sweeping, running the water. The lights and appliances we use are sized for the system we have installed. The house is earth bermed so it stays warmer in winter and nice and cool in the summer. No fans and extra furnace for us.

That's really nice. I wish it could be done all over the world.

Well after this past summer when we got a $500 electric bill you bet we did some work to conserve on things. We turned down the water heater, turned up the fridge and freezers so they aren't as cold (they were too cold to begin with). We set the a/c to a higher number. Living in Florida we need it on but we turned it a bit higher. We got rid of a very old chest freezer. That turned out to be the biggest electric hog. Lots of little things but it did help.

That's right. We need to review our home appliances because most of the old ones are the culprit in electricity usage. Savings could indeed be big when all small things are added up.

Vow!!! Thats really cool! I usually turn off lights and fans whenevr not necessary and try to use acs or heaters only when needed the most.

I turn off everything I can. And I keep the furnace turned as low as possible, which is hard when it is around 20' here. I try to combine things I do and have switched all my lights to lower wattage compacts. I also charge my cell phone, ipod, and laptop on solar chargers.

I turn off lights when I'm not using them and also don't leave the stereo or TV or computer on when not using them. In the summer I use the air conditioner as a last resort, only when fans don't keep me cool. I also use those compact flourescent light bulbs that burn less energy and supposedly last for years.

I use to do more or less the same thing and I can add that I use low consumption (fluorescent) lamps.

Wow, you should be saving a lot of money on electricity. The problem in our place is we can't really save on power because we need the heater running 24/7 since the temp outside is -2 celsius here in Albany NY.

I'm sorry to hear about your present temp. I would normally prefer the cold from the hot temperature but if it's extremely cold, I would wish I were in my beautiful tropical country.

yes.energy conservation is very prominent now. because the naturalresources are getting decreased. and power consumption is becoming very high now a days. i always try to save the energy tomy lelel best. doing so ,i can have some more power after some period

There are a lot of ways to save energy, and reduce energy consumption in our house. some of the techniques known to me are: using CFL(Compact Fluorescent Lamp) instead of ordinary Incandescent Bulbs, it reduces more than 60% energy consumption for the same output of light. moreover, we should use electronic chokes instead of conventional electromagnetic chokes used in fluorescent tubes, use of LCD monitors instead of CRT monitors will also save energy(it saves space too), new advanced AC s and washing machines are already in the market which saves energy. another thing to mention, in connection with switching off any electronic gadgets such as TV, music system etc, it is better to switch off from socket manually rather switching off through remote(if only switched off through remote, it consumes some amount of energy in standby mode) when not in use at all. also, it is to be note that, chargers(for eg. mobile phone chargers) should be pulled out of the socket/plug or switch off the manual on/off switch when not in use of charging purpose. I think, these tricks will definitely help to save energy at home. however some tricks may be costlier one to implement but, due to less consumption, it will reduce running cost. so, kindly use these tricks and watch how you get benefited.

I do all the things you've mentioned. I use the washing machine when I have a full load (the more power used when the load is less). We've got good ventilation at our house. So, I don't use the lights or fans during the day time. I try to use more tubelights than the Watt bulbs which use up lots of energy. The water heater is switched on only once...after which if I need hot water and a small amount, I heat it on the stove.

I too switch off the lights and the tv and fan and other gadgets when not needed. We use gas for cooking and I keep the things needed for cooking ready and then switch on the stove.

i tried to practice it,but nothing happen.still our consumption is so big.so we plan to buy solar to provide our own electric energy.
