Why are so many americans losing their jobs?

United States
December 27, 2006 2:22pm CST
My husband was laid off from one of the top leading axle truck manufacturing companies in the united states. Why? Because the head ceo wanted a 7 million dollar christmas bonus *which he didnt get anyway* and he had to lay off hard working americans move the jobs overseas and cut back on benefits in order to get it. But, instead of course the judge said he couldnt anyway. Where i live, over 5000 people have been laid off, our unemployment has risen and people are angry. I just dont understand how the land of opportunity suddenly shuts it doors, and puts its people in difficult situations. Looking for a job has become a pain, people just dont want to hire because many other companies are readying up for a lay off as well. Anyone have in opinions or experiences with this?

No one can take other person's job. It all depends on how capable you are to do the job. If your boss is satisfied with you, Why the hell, he will look for the alternative.

If jobs were cut...then there is no point in taking away other's job opportunities.

If some foreigner is working in ur house as a maid, then will you say he/she is stealing your own countrymen's job opportunity. It is a foolish response I ever heard. If you are getting a cheap labor obviously you choose him. It is simple principle of Supply Vs. Demand. Ask some American to work for the rate as other immigrants...he/she will kick the boss on butts and goooooooooooooo.

Don't worry, it happens all around the world. I hear Egypt and India are having bette days than the rest of the world because they have cheap labour. But if you want my opinion it's a matter that government should look upon. But no... your government sees how to win wars in other countries and never really thinks about all of you. Protest... it;s the only way to gain.

I think you are right our government (U.S.) too busy spending money on wars then worrying about it's own citizens. There are many people in this country living on the streets and without health coverage. Everthing is so expensive we can't afford to live in minimum wage. Our country is a mess and we should worry about the war that is being fought in our cities on a daily basis.

Blame the consumers. They want the same product for less money. The easiest way to bring prices down is to cut jobs.

You know, its hbalf luck really. Your dad gets laid off work as well as say...5 more people around the world at the same time, but another 5 would just get new jobs. Although, some people do get cut due to new machinery. The fact that your dad lost his job was just that he was unlucky

If your husband is really hardworking, then he shouldnt worry abt the lost job. He will surely get the better one. He should take this as a opporunity to learn as a lesson, that he shouldnt work with a stupid CEO like now...because if king is clever then only the kingdom will be happy.

I think that today the difficulty to find a job is hard in any country. But I believe that it is not impossible. But we have that to look for. Here agencies exist that help to find a job. in its country also it has?

Well now this is a good topic.First of all my heart moves out for you and all my sympathies for losing the job.I firmly believe that your husband will get very soon another good job.I am from India but i am currently working abroad. The main reason why i am here is that this company wanted work at a cheap rate and i agreed to work at that rate.I am paid lower than what an average worker gets here. This company has cut throat competetion here and cannot afford to have huge costs,so they have done this. This phenomenon is happing all around the globe.A lot of work is getting outsourced.Even in india there is a concept of shared services where the jobs which are same in different companies is done by outsourcing to another compoany.Philips for example all around the world have their shared service centralised in India. There are numerous other examples i can quote but there may be a day when i may get out as this company would gt another person to do the job at lower cost. This is competetion and low cost high quality companies only will survive.I am not being complacent and am looking for other alternatives so that my uture is safeguarded.Gone are those days when you are indispensable.Take care and may god bless you.

I work in construction, or should i say worked, I worked hard everyday, close to Ten hours a day, only to be let go so they could hire two hispanics for the price of one american... I would advise non americans not to answer this one, because you dont know anything about the american work ethic....

Every body is a hard worker as long as he is needy, irrespective of the country he belongs. So its useless to talk on this topic that americans arent harworkers. i would say, outsourcing is a good thing being a citizen of an under developed country. But than if its making americans loose their jobs this should not go this way. I used to think that this is something really new and good, which is not only economically helping businesses but also helping in making relations good between different countries. what i used to think is every country should outsource what they cant do to some other country and in a way outsourcing should carry on .

I just saw a show on this same topic and can't believe that the US is doing this. What are they thinking? Do they think that they are going to save money. Maybe in the short-term, but what is going to happen in the next few years? My husband has also has a two year college degree that might as well be a boat anquor, because everyone wants him to have at least two years experience before they will hire him. I think that we need to get our jobs back.

i think indians or chinese are appointed as they are faster in all ways also they can be paid less than americans for the same job aslo main think that i heard that americans think that everything is easy but the truth is that nothing is easy in todays world

America is deep in debt and is finally having to prune it's work forces ... to stay profitable many companies are having to leave America and give employment to third world countries who will take on the jobs for a lot less pay ... it's been happening right across the world for the last few years ... I'm afraid it's the way the world works now ... and it's going to get a lot worse before it starts to get better

It's like this! Americans won't work for minimum wage so the companies hire all these foreigners here to work for them and the company saves money! This whole country is nothing but a money racket!

The recent trend in American companies is to outsource work to other countries for to pay cheaper labor and less taxes!! Every place you call now a days for assistance is working out of a different country and all of our products are made somewhere else. How do some of the people from other countries feel about American business moving to your country and paying your workers less then they were paying American workers?
