Do you agree with the legal drinking age being 21?

Okay, i don't know if it applies to all states or varies, but in Ireland it's 18. If it was 21 I think a lot of young people would want to die! lol! And plus whether that would apply to the pubs and nightclubs too would also have a huge impact on us here. College students would truly despair..:) Are you allowed into nightclubs etc in the U.S. if you're under 21?

No, I don't agree with it being 21 if you can be 18 to buy cigs or join the military. Just doesn't make sense. Because it is 21, then you shouldn't be able to join the military, vote, or buy cigs until that age! Otherwise, change the drinking age to 18! They do it anyway!

I agree to the joining the military are worse the draft I think if your old enough to be in a draft you should be old enough to drink .I myself am 37 so this does not effect me but I know under age people well drink any way I think if they drink legal chances are they might be more respounsible then if hiding .

Well here where i am the legal drinking age is 18 also. i remember that when i was younger i used to think of the US where the drinking age is 21 and be glad i wasnt there. Then again i think if youre gonna drink your gonna drink, i dont think a legal limit will make to much difference to someone who wants to drink anyway, it just means thay will not be able to do it in a socially acceptable fashion.

I personally think if you are old enough to live on yor own, and go to war for your country, you should be able to drink. It is 21 here, but you can go to war at 18. Makes sense, huh?

A lot of people have been pointing that out, and it does raise some interesting questions, such as why is the law so stupid sometimes! lol!

Well to be honest I would prefer it to be 21 but as you say the same goes here in the UK it would be a disaster and really at the end of the Day they would find a way to drink anyway just like they do now before they are 18

In the USA alot of policies are SOLD to the pouplation, but have no real basis in common sense. I think the drinking age here should be 18. Saving lives just takes some adjustment in driver's education, but here, people fall for the emotional arguments made for just about EVERYTHING that might bring an individual pleasure. I am sure youhave noticed that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard that some countries have NO age limit (or a very young limit) and that in these countries people don't really go out and get drunk as much as they do here in the US. Ideally, I think there would be NO limit since if it was legal all the time there would be no appeal for 18-21 year olds to try and get wasted illegally. However, since the law has been in place for so long, I think dropping it to 18 now would be a huge mistake. We would have thousands of 18-21 would be trying to get their hands on drinks anytime they could and I think they would go nuts for a little while. Right now, they still try to get drinks, but most will also try not to get into too much trouble about it. Once we hit 21, the appeal of drinking goes away almost completely for most people, but if the law were to change, I just think 18-21 year olds would be too excited, and go overboard getting wasted since they can.

i think they have a good idea in France, children are allowed to drink at home with their parents, and they haven't half the problems we have here.

I don't agree with it. In many places the leagl age to do anything else except drink and gamble is 18. If a person is mature enought to vote for who is going to be in office then they should be old enough to decide if they want to drink. In the US there are clubs that you only have to be 18 to go into but in order to drink you are suppose to be 21. That is not to say that there are not ways around this rule. I just turned 21 2 months ago so I know all about the tricks of the trade.

I think 21 is too strict. I think parental guidance (PG) in drinking for the 18-21 should be permitted. In most matters it is my belief that youngsters cannot and should not be disciplined by parents beyond the age of 15. You give your kids good values until they are 15 and then let them go on their own.

You can go into some clubs and some bars at 18, but not all of them. I do like the legal drinking age at 21, I know people at 18 who were definently not ready to handle the responsibility of drinking. I know people much older than that that can't handle it.

some people will just never be able to control their drinking, though at 21 you'd hope people would be a bit more mature and responsible than they were at 18.

In the US you can get into some night clubs at 18, it depends on how they have it set up. However most just try to keep it at 21 to save them headaches. I don't agree with it being at 21. It gets me that at 18 we are considered adults, we can sign contracts, get married, join the military but we can't buy alchohol until we are 21. At 16 a girl can decide to have an abortion without her parents permission, you can get a license to drive, you can quit school, and even be charged as an adult for a crime but you can't go out and buy a drink. None of that makes sense to me. They need to determine one age for it all. One age for when they are considered to an adult and not flucuate it for different things.

I don't think lowering the age will help with this. I am over the legal age and I still binge drink. I think college is more of a problem for binge drinking :D, now that most of my friends are married , they don't get to drink as much as they used to and when they can they hit it hard too . so maybe binge drinking is a "how often can you drink" issue, but I actually think it is a self control issue. a person binge drinks because they want to get drunk.

College is def a problem for binge drinkers, you have the house parties and going out 2 or 3 times a week. And i agree it's a self control issue, people just forget how much damage they are doing to themselves.

Yes definitely. 21 is young already. Any younger and they have to do something with driving regulations. At that age people are still getting use to their freedom from getting out of their parents house. I know they have nightclubs for teenagers starting at age 16!

I don't like it. I think the legal age in the US should be 18. Making it 21 adds a "thrill" to it that causes underage drinkers to see drunkenness as the "cool" or the "in" thing. Increase the age, and the amount of lame incidents caused by underage drinking will decrease.

hopefully the amount of incidents would decrease, but many more might binge drink whenever they could.
