Many Plasmas*ARE* HD though some are only ED (enhanced definition).
Uh, plasmas do not "burn out in a year". I know because I have a Panasonic plasma and it has not burned out yet.
I did YEARS of research before making my purchase decision and would not have bought a plasma if it's lifespan was only one YEAR or if modern plasmas were worse than a traditional CRT TV.
With a viewing time of 5 hours a day and a phosphor half-life rating of 50,000, you might expect 27 YEARS of usable life fromt he plasma.
In a nutshell, Plasma TVs are fine and, if taken care of, will offer a lifespan potentially greater than that of a traditional CRT TV.* Avoid static images for a long time (TiVo menu, DVD menu, video game with no one playing).
* Turn off the TV when not in use
* Don't use the TV in "Vivid" settings except maybe when you are trying to watch a show in the middle of the day with lots of ambient light
* Tune the TV picture (Plasma, CRT, LCD, OLED, SED, Rear-projection, or otherwise), using "Digital Video Essentials" DVD from Joe Kane productions for optimal picture.
but i prefer LCD TV.
