Do you believe in the "bucket" theory? Let me explain. When a person is "created" there is an empty bucket. Only so much room to fit everything in that compiles a person. In this "bucket" you will find beauty, brains, personality, height, weight, and everything else that makes a person who they are. Here is the kicker.......there is only so much room in the bucket, so consider a person who is very beautiful.........if there is more beauty in his or her bucket, what is sacrificed? Remember, there is only a certain amount of room in the bucket, so there must be less of something if there is more beauty........... I have seen proof of this in the people I know. Do you think the theory is a good one?

Even in my school days there were some students who were always ahead of others in their studies. Strangely enough they also take part in sports activities, extracurricular activietes and literary activites and perform well in those areas too. When I see a lady doctor who is so beautiful, playing in a netball team I wonder why some are gifted in every way.
Your bucket theory is interesting. I think some are born with a big bucket and some are born with a thimble.

This is an unusual but good theory pookie and one that never entered my head until now, but you are right and the theory is a good one. I have only one thing though and that is that I think some people MUST have bigger buckets than others, because some are beautiful inside and out, great personality, brains, compassion, personality etc whilst others don't have many redeeming features at all.
I will certainly view people in a different light after reading this, and perhaps try to work out who has a big bucket, who has only a small one and who has just an ordinary everyday bucket. LOL
Thanks for a really great discussion pookie and I have given you a positive (+) rating for it. :)

That is a very interesting theory--and oddly enough makes a lot of sense to some extent. I do know a few people that seem to have it all, beauty, brawn, and brain. I agree with the post above mine, I will be looking at people in a different way wondering what's in their proverbial bucket.
Nice discussion! Thanks for posting it.

no one is perfect! thats why there is always something missing, but for me if you like a person you look at his good qualities and dont look for bad qualities...

Interesting concept, but I do not really feel this is the way that things really are, but I do believe sometimes when a person is Beautiful that is what everyone looks at, even if their personality, etc. is lacking. And if they are homely they are overlooked a lot of times unless they are really smart.
I guess to me, I feel I am just right. I do not have Beauty, but I have some Brains. I have a great sense of humor and Love life, and all god has given me. I feel if people do not like me for who I am, then it is their loss. I would rather have what I have now than what I could have been offered if I was someone else.

This is a great post and one that now has me sitting here pondering the bucket theory...I would have to say that some of this does seem to play out in real life. I wonder how much control we have over how we fill our buckets? You might be able to apply this to the things we put in our life too (ex. lots of money, but no time or lots of time with family/friends but sacrifice the money...)

We are all born with gifts, some are visible and some are not. Our genetics, environment and drive contribute to our success. Two people that have very similar buckets (looks and brains) may reach very different levels of success. It's an interesting theory, however. If you have ambition and "pure guts", a seemingly small bucket of natural gifts soon multiplies to overflowing. On the other hand, some people that seem to have it all, end up with very empty lives. Years ago as a teenager I read an interesting quote,
"no one walks in sunshine all the days of their life". So no matter what your bucket looks like today... check back in ten years and it may look totally different.

the purpose of the bucket theory is to make people think. I am glad that some people are seeing that the bucket contents are somewhat controlled by the person too. I believe we can balance ourselves out to some extent with our actions and dealing with other people. Maybe we can even share and add to the bucket of another from time to time??? Wouldn't THAT be cool!

Nonsense. Maybe ugly people devote themselves to their studies more often because they know they won't get ahead in the world on their looks. Maybe beautiful people cash in on their looks and follow professions that don't require a lot of mental work. There's no such thing as a "bucket". There are plenty of people out there who are beautiful and smart and plenty more who are ugly and stupid. I'm kicking your bucket! :D

An interesting theory. I have always wondered why we are all so different even within our own families.
Why are some people motivated and determined to succeed in life while others are happy to sit back and let others do all the work.
What about people who change their lives. Do they trade in their buckets for new ones??
I do know a few people who have got holes in their buckets. No matter what is said to them, 2 seconds later its gone again.
However,I don't want to look in my bucket, for fear its going rusty!!!

Well, I'd like to think that the theory you mention is the reason for some beautiful people seeming to lack brains. However, I tend to lean towards laziness as being the reason behind this. It seems once a person learns they can get by on looks alone they get lazy and stop trying to develop their brains to their full potentials.

Gee that is an interesting idea, you might have something there, when you really think about it, it could very well be right. It would be nice to think things were more even...

It has a point, but I don't see that fitting me. A bucket is too small to fit me in it. I want something bigger than that.

ummm, some food for thought no doubt, but are you trying to say that all beauties are basically dumb? what about people who are exceptionally tall or more muscularly built? why have you picked on beauty only? and what about people who are very brainy? what do they lack? they maybe a bit unsocial coz they are quite impressed with themselves, but that's hardly a bucket overflowing syndrom, is it?

With great beauty, much time is sacrificed. It takes hours each day to maintain youth and beauty. Often vanity can consume a beautiful person's world and thus they sacrifice their souls as well.

No I don't. Certainly there are limiting factors on all those traits; both genetic and environmental. But I have seen many beautiful, smart and successful people. And to subscribe to that theory means there can be no development or personal growth once the 'bucket' is full.
