"Made in China" drives me nuts!!!

I have always done crafts. And I used to do craft shows. But 10 years ago I opened my own craft and gift shop in a quaint town in NJ. I build my own work.
People used to like hand made items but in the past few years I have noticed that home made does not matter anymore. I work hard to build quality items for my shop. Then I go to other shops and see the MIC items and that gets my blood boiling. The worst thing is going to craft shows and seeing the items people are selling and claiming they made them. When I know better.
I have the ability to purchase such things and I do have the catalogs. But I enjoy making the items and selling them. I would never claim to have made such cheap junk. I would be embarrassed to put my name to anything so cheap. And guess what folks. They are selling the things cheap but.... they are making a mint off of it. If it sells for $25 they only paid about $3. So you too are being ripped off.
The US stores have very little anymore that is made here! My husband owns a hardware store and in the past 10 years he has seen his stock like Stanley, go from being made in the U.S. to China and other places. How sad is that?
We need to stand up for the US workers! Get our jobs back. Buy Made in the USA!!

Hmm.. this reminds me of the whole WalMart story. They buy from china were labor is cheap so they can sell their items cheap. Which in turn brings small 'made in america' stores out of business.

I understand your point exactly. I use to make a sell crafts in a craft mall, but then my stuff stopped selling and I was barely making a profit as it was, so I started checking out the reasons and seen that some of the items I had made were for sell very cheap in the other vendors areas, I started investigating and what do you know made in china.
I know part of the problem is people would rather buy the handmade items made in the USA, but they can't afford it. I say don't buy them then, if we stop buying such cheaply made products then perhaps more money will stay in the USA and we can afford to buy handmade USA items.
I have a cousin who is much older and I remember he owned several businesses and he asked my mom to pick something up for him when she was going to some place, he said but only if it is made in the United States. I thought it was odd, but now as an adult I understand.
I did find out through the years he only bought USA made products for his home and businesses. He would search and even pay higher prices for items made in the USA. And guess what his businesses have expanded and he now owns several other businesses. He taught his business concepts to his children and turned two businesses over to his son at age 14 and 16. His son's business have grown as well.
I know my cousin had to buy a product one time that was partially made in another country after he searched for nearly two years for an alternative. He said I will continue to search for 100% USA made product so I can sell the one that was bought or I will replace the parts with USA made parts when I find them.
If people would stop selling out to the materalistic world of needing everything so they can't afford well made products because they have spent money to keep up with the neighbor or relative. Just decide to buy USA made items or whatever country you live in, buy only products made in your country.
I know it is hard to find things that are 100% USA made items these days, because either all or part of the product is made in another country. I say at least try to buy products from companies that are United States based.
My challenge to everyone this week is take the time and look where items are made and only buy products made in your country this week, whether that is the USA, China, Europe, Canada, etc.

You are welcome and thank you for putting a stop to items beings sold that were not handmade in the USA in your craft mall. I wish more shop owners would do the same thing.
Happy New Year to you, too.

You hit the nail right on the head!! Thank you for your comment. I have been in business for 10 years now. Actually it is a craft mall. Or started out that way. I actually had vendors that bought ABC stuff and MIC stuff to sell in my store. I stopped that real quick. It was under cutting everyone else. Now I do my own work and sometimes consign my space to others. I refuse to craft shows because I can not compete with the people who buy made in ? for pennies and sell the items dirt cheap. They are so much cheaper made than my work but people do not seem to care. They just buy the lower grade stuff.
Thanks again for posting and have a great New Year.

Its the same in the UK. Many local shop owners have gone out of business due to the cheap imports we now have from other countries, including China or major supermarkets like Tescos.
This also extends to call centres now. Alot of the time when I make a call I am phoning India.
The only people who profit are the share-holders. Many workers in the UK have lost their jobs because companies move abroad. We import coal, when our mines are closed but could be re-opened, giving employment to so many.
I wish you luck.
Do you sell your products online as this seems the best way nowadays. Personally, I hate shopping and will always try to buy online first.

Hi
Many MANY years ago, we had the best Steel Making plant in the world!!!
SHEFFIELD STEEL !!!
It was renound!!
If you bought anything made of Sheffield Steel you KNEW it was good!!!
This Smelting Plant CLOSED YEARS AGO !!!!
The ROVER CAR plant used to make some of the BEST cars in UK.........
CLOSED........ purchased by............. CHINA !!!!!!!!!!
Try to phone your BANK in the UK... it will go to.. India!
Then, when you say you want to speak to a specific person, they wil re-route the call back to MY HOME TOWN from India and it is STILL CHEAPER !!! .... work that one out!
Profiteering I am afraid is the one thing that no one likes, but we have to put up with!!!

China is actually the manufacturing hub of the world. You will find made in China items everywhere. Unless you can beat them in quantity, quality and cost. If you can beat them in these three then you are the leader. But China did a good thing by sending even worse quality goods to India. Now these goods gets messed up very fast and the people got fed up over there. So in India they rather prefer buying Indian goods then Chinese goods.

Actually in my line of work, the china product is crap and of poor quality. But the stores that sell it can sell more because the product falls apart and the consumer buys more. And no I cant beat them at price because my average item takes me hours to build. I don't even get minimum wage most of the time. And I do all of the work myself.
Anyway thanks for the response.

seems that you are having tough competesion huh. well china made things are really cheap but not that good also, and the fact that china is also the worlds leader when it come to manufacturing goods now a days made it more tough for u.s. and european companies to adjust their strategy and find it more practical to go china's way. now we are seeing lots of companies going east or to china for their cheap labor. really tough on your side i say. greetings. : )

Many people on this discussion say that China is the world leader. Wrong. Made is China means that work was done in China, but compony owner in 80% is from different country. Big corpotartions use cheap work place like China to create huge profit.

Yes .. here in the Uk we have just about everything imported from the East .. what amazes me is that the products have to be transported literally half way around the world .. and yet they are still cheaper than they can be mode in our home countries .. I think this just shows how overinflated our own economies are and that perhaps we need to look much harder at how we make things, how much the labour force gets paid and how we could and should do better ...
I would love to support our own British companies and buy only British goods ... but to be honest I simply cannot afford it most of the time .. although I do buy British if the price is right

Many Americans want to buy items made in the U.S., but most also want to pay a low price. So they'll buy the lowest price they can get for acceptable quality. Manufacturers also will set up operations in other countries where costs are lower, so they can charge the lower prices that customers want. If Stanley kept their operations in the U.S. and charged a higher price, I bet most customers would by cheaper imports, because even though they'd like to buy American they ultimately want the lower price.
It gets harder with things like cars, because some American brands have parts that are made outside the U.S., and some foreign brands have manufacturing plants in the U.S.

You are correct. But now nothing except for the small artists work is made in the US. As you said even the car parts are made outside the US. The cars are assembled here but that is about it.
And the consumer doesnt want just the low price. The want the lowest price. And they compromise their product by doing so. It is a cheaper grade product that doesnt last as long. That is what we have come to.
Some of the large retailers sell the lowest price and their products fall apart quicker. The quality is not there. But as you said that is what they want. And they will continue to want and get.
My famous saying here is, you get what you pay for.

I believe that today the fake contributes for the increase of bad things in our country as for example the depreciation of our money, and not the contribution with taxes.
I know that the things are very expensive today, but the times are better to more spend a little for a quality product, of that to lose bad money in something and of very bad quality.

Yes, we have more as youput it "fake" goods in our country. From shoes, to pocket books, to sports teams. And most of it comes from China. But that is because they dont have the laws we do. And of course when you purchase the fakes, you get poor quality items.
But the general population does not mind the fakes just dont complain about the quality.
You get what you pay for.

Labor cost in China is much cheaper compare to US and as far as I know...China does not honor patent rights that's why there are lots of imitated products from china having the worst quality some won't even last for a day.

You are so right. Sometimes a little higher price is worth being able to keep the item for a longer time. But that is not what the general US person wants. They seem to not care about quality. They just want cheap. And as time goes they will spend more because they have to replace the items time and time again.

It's not just made in China; it's made in sweatshops. Made buy little kids who ought to be in school. Made by slave labor and other things I'd rather not care to spend my hard earned money being a part of economically. I find it hard, though, to exexcute my values because I don't have a lot of money. I would be so upset if I went to a craft store and found out that an artist hadn't made the work, but instead brought it in China.

Well that is the way it is. My goal while I am still in business is to build the unique. Keep my crafts different from the norm. I do not do craft shops because most people are lazy now and go the easy route. they purchase from wholesalers that sell MIC stuff. And they resell it. But I watch people get so excited about the product. so who do I blame. The seller or the buyer?
Just be aware when you shop at craft shops and shows. Ask questions. Look carefully because even though I make similar things, no two ever look exactly alike. You can tell they are handcrafted.
Thanks for your comment.

I was over a friends house not too long ago and sitting next to his shower was the wrapping for a new shower curtain. In big bold letters the name of the company 'American Plastics' was splashed across the top of the page. However, in tiny letters at the bottom of the page -- you guessed it: "MADE IN CHINA" Very funny stuff.

Yeah, that is the standard. I would love to do a test. maybe I will. See how many made in the USA items I can find in a week. I dont think there are too many out there.
I bought towels for my bathroom the other night. And they had MIC on them. Where does it stop?
Got to live with it. Nothing one can do. I dont make towels. lol
Thanks for posting.
