I think atleast 3 years before you can be considered 'experienced', so that you can position yourself better for the next job.

One should stay in a job until a superior opportunity is made available and has equal, if not better job security and prospect for advancement.

The moment you're bored or don't like it change. If not, stay.

I've wondered about this myself, and more and more I think that if you very much dislike a job, and you feel you can make comparable money/benefits elsewhere, then it's time to think about polishing off your resume.

I have always stayed with a job at least two or more years and some it has been five yrs. In order for you to be able to show responseability and be dependable you must have several years on your resume. Also the trade you are applying for you need several years and sometimes college to show you have experience and can do the job right.

It depends on your job, other possibilities and how much you are depending on your job ...
If I don't like the job to much and there are plenty of opportunities around I never sticked very long to the job I didn't like and it never hurted me or my reputation ..
It's harder to find a new job if you are already in a rut and in a comfy zone with your old one .A new job always bears risks of change

If you absolutely don't like the job, you're doing yourself more harm than good by staying and future employers will understand that, if you take the time to explain it.
However, if you are constantly changing jobs, then that's going to raise some redflags.

I think if you are happy in the job, then you should stay until it becomes unbearable or it is no longer a challenge. Without a challenge what is the point in staying in the same job when eventually you will become unhappy there.
Twice I left good jobs after 6 years with that employer because there was no longer any challenge for me and I knew that soon enough I would become bored and unhappy, which in turn would affect the quality of my work. :)
