I have been using olive oil for cooking for a long time. Of late, my sis-in-law said that it should not be used for deep frying as it causes cancer. Have you heard of that one? If so, then isn't it bad?

Sorry, your sister-in-law is wrong. Olive oil is the only lipid (fat) that is actually thought to help prevent certain cancers and how if is used (for cooking, frying or untouched) has nothing to do with it. Those in the Mediterranean eat diets high in olive oil and have the low cancer and heart disease rates.
BTW, olive oil is good for not causing bad cholesteral.

Yes ilse72,I've read about all the good of olive oil which is why I switched to using it for a long time already. I guess my sis-in-law must have been so wrong.

I haven't heard that but I know that you shouldn't use it for deep frying because it is not a high heat oil. If you deep fry you should use canola or vegetable oil.

Thanks, perhaps you have got a point there that it's not a high heat oil...

olive oil is not made for deep frying, it's more used as a staple. Peanut oil is the best oil to fry in. Olive oil is more likely to burn quicker than any other oil.

My goodness!! I haven't heard either one of these things. Probably because I spend all my time here and don't get out much!! LOL I certainly am not a cook by the stretch of anyone's imagination, but I know my husband (he cooks) has always used olive oil. I don't know why I think this, but I would think that olive oil would be too heavy for deep frying. Where did I get this idea? Is there any truth to it? It seems to me that every fifteen to twenty years the things that were 'bad' for you become 'good' for you. Example, Butter. It's like fashion, what was old is new. I just never really know what to beleive half the time. If I worried about all the crap they tell us (control of the masses), I'd starve!! It is interesting though.

I have never heard anything about either olive oil or canola oil causing cancer if you deep fry with it. I use canola or peanut oil for deep frying. I use EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) for sauteing.

I really don't think it causes cancer....Doctors recommend the use of olive oil because it's good for keeping your cholesterol normal...I just started buying it...my bf has high cholesterol so we changed to it from vegetable oil...It tastes the same..and yes it's a little more expensive but it's better for your health....

I also use olive oil and have done so for years. I do not use it for deep frying though but would be interested to know more. I doubt that deep frying with olive oil would cause cancer though, as how experts suggest that this is the best type of oil to use.

I have never heard that about olive oil before, but lately who knows...seems like every day there is something else that is being said to cause cancer.
