Find a portrait that interests you - photo with good lighting.
Turn it upside down and ONLY draw what you see, not what SHOULD be there.
There is a book called "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" by Betty Edwards - this is her method and it does work! let us see what you have done.

i think maybe a charcoal scetch would be the best for the first time they maybe a portrait can be done.

I have the same problem. But, the main focus of my artwork never has been people. I am, though, planning to do some portraits because I need to practice. All I can say is practice and read books on portrait painting. Get to know the proportions of the face.

Draw from life as much as you can. Beleive it or not, it's easier than drawing from photographs, at least when it comes to faces and people. And the more you do it the easier it becomes to work from photos. I also recommend the book "Drawing from the right side of the brain."
