I just came across a discussion on knitting and realized (duh!) that there were knitters on myLot... don't know why I didn't think of it before. Anyway, I've enjoyed the discussions about knitting that I've found, but I'm curious: How long have you been knitting? I learned when I was a young teenager, so that was around 45 years ago.

I've been knitting about two years now and I really love it. I have crocheted since I was 9 and every time I asked someone to teach me to knit they said it was really hard so I never tried. Once I decided to learn I taught myself using online resources and I was shocked by how easy it is. I love the versatility of knitting. I love how I can make so many different types of fabric and textures with just two simple stitches. I spend every free moment I have knitting. I'm saddened that it took me so long to work up the courage to try it but I'm so glad that I finally did.

I used to spend a lot more time knitting than I do now. It hurts my shoulders to knit for long periods of time, and I miss being able to.

I was taught the very basics when I was about 3 or 4 by my mother, who also taught me to sew, crochet and darn at the same time. SO thats over 30 years ago now, hardly seems like 5 minutes!

Just like nancygibson, I learnt to knit, crochet and darn when I was really young. I can remember doing it all whilst my little brother was still crawling around, and he is only 18 months younger than me. 33 odd years later, my dad reminds me everytime he see's me knitting that I started to knit before I could crawl. He's not quite sure what happened he says, he claims I was a realy smart and bright baby, but then I grew up lol. I think I was about 6 when I learnt tatting, but haven't done that for 20 years now, I'd love to start again.

I started knitting about 10 years ago. I started out knitting scarfs. I still mainly knit scarfs. I advanced to hats recently but get too bored with the yarn and stitch to knit a sweater, blanket or pancho. I did do a blanket by knitting about 20 seperate squares and them sewing them all together at the end.

I learned when I was about 10 how to crochet. I learned to knit when I was 19, so I have been knitting for about 5 or 6 years now, and I love it! I knit things for everyone, and knit many many things for myself. It's hard to stop once you start, LOL!

I understand! It's hard to stop once you start... my kids and grandkids are tired of my knitted things and I have more than enough for me and my house... but still, I knit.

Wow, this is an old thread! Thanks for digging it up! It's good to see younger people knitting nowadays. For such a long time it was an old folks' hobby and that's about it. I hope the trend continues.

I have been knitting for over 20 years now. My aunt taught me when I was around 12. She figured it would give me something to do as I refused to go into the barn. lol I've been hooked on it ever since. Now I am teaching my eight year old daughter how to knit and it's a blast!

I learned when I was about eight years old, I have not knit since my boys were small, that is since they were about a year old, and the reasons being that I started to gain weight, and found that many of the free patterns ended at about 36 inches bustlines, and to get a larger pattern I would have to pay more. The other being, I was brought up with giving birth to a baby, knitting the new born set for him or her, I missed out on my sons since they were adopted by us at three months old and it was fairly quick, so no time. Then I got too busy. I might start it up again.

I bought a learn to knit/learn to crochet book when I was pregnant with my daughter. I've been doing both now for about 4 years. I think my favorite thing to knit is socks.

My mom taught me the basic k1,p1 and a simple bind-off when i was around 8 or 9. When i was about 23 i decided to venture out and try more complicated patterns. I depended on numerous how-to websites and books to get me through the rough patches. I also taught myself to crochet using online instructions.
