I have been inspired to knit mismatched socks. That is to say, you make a pair of striped socks or patterned socks. Both socks use the same yarn colors, but other than that, they don't match. It's a bit of whimsy that I keep saying I'm going to do someday.
Anyone else want to play with me? Rebel against knitting conformity. Did you know both sides of your face don't match? Your ears don't match? Even your feet don't match. So why should your socks match.

I do this quiet a lot, for example I knit a paoir or red and blue socks, where one has blue toes and heels and a red body, the other is reversed with a blue body and red toes and heels. the other thing Ido a lot is knit three socks wit the same body colour but all different heels and toes, that way you wear any two at a time that you fancy. Its good fun to do and is more interesting to knit than a pair

Its good if you plan on lots of socks the same size, means whatever is clean is a pair!

I'm glad you dropped by. You have some great discussions going and I wanted to add you as a friend. I loved the paper doll discussions. If anyone hasn't read your posts yet they are missing out.

I have never done that (on purpose) in all my years of knitting! I have, however, made socks where the pattern didn't match (by accident). And I made a pair where one was bigger than the other, but that was ok, because one of my feet is bigger than the other. I just have to remember to pay attention to which foot I put them on.

Ack! That would drive me crazy! It drives me crazy that my face and ears don't match, as well! LOL I actually began a pair of sock a few weeks ago, however, I'm finding the pattern to be a little ackward. Does anyone have a good sock knitting pattern, then maybe I will join your challange. :)

This is an interesting discussion. Color reversals are always fun to do. I never thought of knitting 3 socks at once. I have enough trouble making 2 match.
I think it would be wonderful to have one sock pattern memorized, so I could quickly knit socks whenever I have a moment to spare. But since every time I make a pair I use a different pattern, I never get one memorized. I'll have to work on that.

I'd love to KAL with you, auburndreams - if I find a moment in my as-yet-still-busy knitting schedule!! Actually, if should free up a little within the next month. :) I'm knitting pretty facecloths for a basket for a close friend, then starting on baby...*soemthing* :), and knitting hubby a caled wool hat. (It's a surprise - he takes public transit, and now that it's finally gotten cold, I think he could use something more than his "newsboy" style cap!)
I love knitting socks, and I like wearing socks that don't quite match. Folks in my social circle tend toward the free-spirited/nonconformist, so mismatched is actually pretty common!
There's a website that acutally seells socks in...fives, I think, of semi-matched - e.g. two polka-dot socks, one black background, one white background. I'll have to find it now, and come back to post it...

Here's another one - I just like this set of not-matched socks:

i do not always wear matching socks anyways sometimes i do not have time to spend matching my socks so i will just pull on socks from different pairs but it does not really matter because my socks are under my pants and down inside my boots so no one would ever know that they do not match i have always wanted to learn to knit socks but i just do not have alot of time to dedicate to knitting but i will eventually learn

Remember the show Punky Brewster? My kids would only wear socks that didn't match. I would mate the socks together and they would take them apart to wear different colors.

I can't knit socks, but I'd do this with mittens. You could have opposing stripes, or different coloured fingers, I suppose.

I know my response isn't about knitting, but I do the same with the jewellery I make and a lot of people have commented on it. I'll make a pair of earrings using the same stones, and both earrings will be the same length, but other than that they are both different! It's also a good way to use up odd rocks or beads! lol

That's such a fun idea. I am a novice knitter...although I have been knitting on and off for years, I can never manage anything that isn't rectangular in shape (so basically I have a ton of scarves and blankets). I would love to learn to knit more, but I don't have anyone local to teach me and I can't afford any classes.

I have some of that self patterning yarn that I'm knitting socks with right now. I've challenged myself to make them actually match rather than just knitting them but what you are doing can be fun too.
Hubby doesn't care if the stripes match or not, he's just happy to have hand knit socks.

I'd never have thought of doing this as Im very particular when knitting, I have to have every row counted, every stitch counted etc. But it drives me nuts.
After reading your discussion, and seeing the bit about Punky Bruster, now Im going to become a little more creative tonight after Ive finished that last pair of sock.
Id love to see a pic of your sock.
