If you do use one, which you should, which one is best to use for a computer and other electronic devices? We get brown outs quite a bit here and occasional power outages so it is important to have one to protect the computer. Any recommendations on a good one? Here is a picture of the one that I am using currently.

Atleast in our area, its a great risk untill we have a good protection...specially for devices like pc,and other sensitives devices.
it depends on the load, but if u want to secure your things like say PC and accessories then the best name is APC.
After it u can go for toshiba but APC really know how to secure your electronic devices from electricity ;)

Remember these items about surges:
They're not always through the electrical outlet. Your modem or high speed connection can route a power surge (lighting strike) right into your PC.
If you overload the surge protector with a bunch of stuff and it's rated too low, it's useless as well.

That is a very good point as I think that is what happened to my previous computer. The motherboard got fried and then my friend promised to fix and return it but he never did and he disappeared with it. I have a much better surge protector and battery backup after what happened last time.

Many people will tell you that a surge protector is an essential piece of equipment, but I have never considered this to be true.
Surges in the power supply do occur, but in the majority of cases you will either blow a fuse or the surge will cause no damage. Nevertheless, if you are unfortunate enough to suffer damage from a surge then it can be very expensive, so despite not considering them essential I do consider that they are a good investment.
Early last year I purchased 2 surge protection towers, each of which will hold 10 plugs. One of these is situation at the rear of my computer to accomodate the tower, monitor, printer and other peripherals and the other controls my television, music centre, video recorder and 2 DVD players. The cost was about £120 (approx $200), so with the cost of equipment that I am using it is a worthwhile insurance.

I definitely feel that it is very worthwhile to have a surge protector for your computer and tv and stereos. My last computer got fried from a power outage, even though it was on a surge protector. Apparently my surge protector at the time was either old or not strong enough. Surges occur frequently where I live so i do need one. I like your avatar. :-)

I have one on the computer and the big screen tv. We rarely get surge problems. But in case, I sure would not want the expense of repairs. I don't know which one is best. Most likely the store can be more knowlegable about it then me. But,ask around a few stores, and see which brand pops up the most.

I don't use any specific brand. But I do use them. Growing up in Florida, power surge protectors were important to use even with the tv or stereo. Lighting being so frequent there, often houses are hit and it will run through the electrical wiring and fry anything that is not protected.
One would think that you would protect everything then, right?
No, so you loose a lamp or two. Maybe this would be a perfect chance to buy a new alarm clock that you might like better. But you would protect the things that are hard to replace if lost. Tv, computer, stereo, surround sound system, etc.
