when my parents were young, they never heard of x'mas or thanksgiving, they only celebrated traditional chinese festival like spring festival or mid-autumn day.but now situation has been totally changed.we are surronded by many concept exported from west.the youngers are more willing to lead a life of western way.the tradition is considered boring and tedious, even rustic.i am not against western culture but i also think tradition should be protected.if not,one day we may have no evidence to convince our children they are not americans.

thanks for your reply and your effort to creat a multi-culture world.there is no better or worse in cultural issue, but only prevalent or not.people are chasing culture as they are chasing fasions.but we cant treat culture as treat fasions.we should actually do something to protect these temprary unpopular ones.
wish your family happy forever.

Hi
Intereting post this one.
I was going to start off by saying there is nothing wrong with Western Culture, but that is not correct, because there are lots of things that I dont like about it now:-
The loss of family values! The Greedyness of people! The dont care less attitude!
But..........
You have to admit that the Old Chinese way is a thing of the past! And you have to come into the 21st Century!
You do not have to become "Americanized" and it would obviously be beneficial if you kept your own Culture!
The way of the world now is Commercialization! Not that I totally agree with that! But........ tourism for example is a big way of your country gaining foreign money! It is estimated that TWO BILLION DOLLARS each year is earned in the UK from Tourism!
I am not a Banker, but simple mathematics tells you that the British Ecomony obvioulsy benefits from this influx of Cash!
We have recently fell in love with Turkey and have a holiday house there, and I read somewhere that there are now 40 MILLION Brits who visit the country each year, giving the Turkish Lira a much need boost!
Maintain your independence, but broaden your outlook!

thanks for the careful reply. it is rationable and reasonable.i am not against western culture and i absolutely agree with that it is winner in motive people and incentive creation.i am also glad to see so many foreigners in my city,we live together peacefully and absorb positive point through each other.i myself like pizza and mfc wery much.and i have thinkpad and ipod and i drive toyota(my father's).but i feel sad to see that people are chasing western way crazily and silly.
i hope them to pay more atttention to our own culture.besides i don't think it's only our issue, culture is belonged to everyone in the world, and should be protected by everyone in the world, that's why i put this topic on mylot most of whose population is western.

I think the major problem is people link up modernisation and westernisation. And think being westernised is being modern which is sadly not true. In India we still celebrate our festivals which i must say are many of people of different faiths, different cultures together. we celebrate festivals diwali, festival of ligths, holi, festival of colours, eid, durga puja, dussehra.... with equal fervour and joy.
Though i feel in this age of liberlisation, teenagers clebrating valentine's day just to impress girls. I think todays youth tend to ape west more as we all are connected to western world trhough media internet, TV, films. I think the media and vested interests just import concepts from the west tyo sell in this age of commercialisation. I mean in india nobody knew valentine's day a couple of decades ago and know it is fashionable in cities.
I think youth of today should have strong moral values and should respect their traditions and culture and take pride in their roots as that is theri identity. I think wes should preserve our customs, culture and tradtions and our way of life and don't need to blindly ape west. We should be modren in our thinking. be open minded, liberal in outlook, positive thinker htat is more important.

ya,man, thanks for reply so thoughtfully and carefully.it seems you have the same feeling like me.as you said, modern means a progressive way of thinking and doing but not following west.people are confused.thay chase a western way of entertainment and wrongly regard it is a symble of moderness.that is stupid and pitiable.our media is advocating western life style and regarding it is supreme and better than our local ones all the time.they are totally wrong, the reason why western countries are more powerful and rich is their way of thinking, not their way of entertainment.

I'm sorry you feel that way, maybe it's not so bad to incorporate some of the western culture into your own. You know that when teenagers are forbidden to do something they will have more fun doing it behind their parents' back. I'm from the Philippines and we used to really celebrate a Fiesta or a party in honor of Patron Saints, now only a few towns do this, a reason for this is poverty some people just can't afford to make a huge feast, so they just go to church instead. Most Filipinos celebrate the Chinese New Year as well, I'm not exactly sure why, maybe Filipinos just love to have a good time.

when your parents were young the chinesse government block out the whole world and ran the country with fear
now your people are free from fear and torture you wish to go back to the old ways
there is no pleaseing some people
p.s. why are you using a computer? your parents didnt have one when they were young, so you are breaking your old traditions and customs
try starting somethign instead of complaining about what you are doing yourself

what i mean is not to totally going back, but properly protected the tradition.i like my way of doing things which is western combined with oriental, and in the balance of the two aspects i can always get better solution.what i scare is losing either.the tendency of current society shows the traditional aspect is easier to lose.thanks for reply.

In Thailand we are not losing our culture but it is evolving and adapting some things from the west. I think if a culture is to survive it must grow and not remain fixed in the past. We need to keep our traditions alive but not fear healthy imports and new things entering our dally lives.

I agree with you. In a world of commercialism and shamelessly invasive Americanism, Christmas and Thanksgiving are being mindlessly celebrated without the true meaning being known, simply because these two holidays are identified as American. In Singapore, the people are proud to celebrate our own ehtnic and religous festivals with everyone of different faiths race and religions, something that would not be possible in many parts of America because of racism and religious insensitivity.

I question why you write this on a discussion board where over 80% (give or take) of the users are Western. My point is you may not find too many people that are going to agree. I do agree though that cultures and traditions should be protected, but it is downfalling everywhere, even in the West.

i have to admit that almost everyone nowadays celebrate Christmas, Valentine's day etc...no matter what races and religion they are in..but still, it's important to know what is our own culture and tradition...my family still think that chinese new year is the most important time of the year as well as some other major chinese festivals...we must never forget our roots! :D

is your culture under attack? or your own conservative spirit. One day, when all the people understand the concept of common world without frontier, why must you convince your children about their identity? They're human, that's enough, no matter american or chinese.

Youngsters mind has totally absorb the western tradition way of celebrating tradition. We can't blame them, the government or people of your own should make something to preserve your tradition. It is important to preserve tradition to recognize one's culture and identity we can boast of.

I totally agree with you. Most of the youngsters today, including me, think the Westerners are better than their own culture. I hope we could protect our culture, or else the day may come when there will be nothing to show of our heritage anymore.
Culture is important. It's what defines a person. So I don't agree with thosewho say it isn't.
