I have noticed alot of post about people using short form answers to answer post. I have found myself doing this at times as well. 1 problem I noticed since Ive started using text messaging is my spelling is absolutely horrible because I have been using short form for so long. I think technology is making us more lazy than anything.

Yes, a lot many times i have observed people using the short terms to utilize time. Bur i think people are getting lazy with this feature not utilizing time. I have found that in your discussion itself. You say that Ive, where the term is I have. See everywhere we use thsi short term or we miss something. To be correct one, you should have used I've. Still you missed a single quote. As long as we understand what is there in teh sentence it is ok i think. May be we are lazy to type, still what we communicate is very important. So dont worry about it. LOL.
I use short terms too. But now here in Mylot is looking for quality, so trying to use the correct language.LOL.

It always depend on the user. In our country it is widely used. Before I also use abbreviation but because I've noticed that if I use short form of words and send it to young people then the next generation will suffer. Especially to my students, I encourage them to write the correct spelling. Never mind saving space because if they get used to it then they might use it in school and always have a wrong spelling. Never mess the art of words

Text messaging, instant messaging, chat rooms... they're all resulting in people being less concerned with their spelling and grammar. What bothers me is that teachers are now having to instruct their students that internet acronyms are NOT acceptable in school assignments. In my daughter's class, the teacher gave multiple samples of papers that were turned in containing LOL's, ROFL's, and even "u" being substituted for "you." It is frightening to me that young people cannot determine that there is a difference between communicating online, where they are zooming along, trying to juggle 40 IM windows at a time, to writing a serious paper for school that is going to affect their grade.

So funny that, after I wrote this, a comic strip appeared in today's newspaper that conveys exactly what I was trying to say! If you don't read "ZITS" or have it in your local paper, you can see it online here... it's cute :)

As I belong to the older generation I think it sad to see English bastardized by using that form of communication. Plus I don't know what the hell they are talking about most of the time. I feel it like a foreign language of which I only know a couple of words such as LOL, LMAO and that is about my limit

I completely agree with you. I find myself using short form or omitting letters all of the time, and making grammatical errors or spelling erros and not bothering to fix them. I would have never done this if i was writing it out on paper. I think that this next generation of adults has been hurt by technology more than anything. We use our computers to write, so we have poor pendminship, and they encourage you to use calculators in school, so we can hardly multiply in our heads any more! It's sad that something that was meant to help, has hindered us so much!

personally, i find it rather annoying, especially if these shortened words are in posts like this since we have so much space! there's really no need for short cuts here, right? I think people should learn to adjust. When you're typing a text message on a mobile phone, fine, shorten your words. But i still think you shouldn't go overboard so the recipient of your text could still understand your message. But when you're typing on your computer, that's a different story, you should spell your words out correctly.

I agree 100% to this arguement. I have a friend of mine as well who has a problem with spellings even grammer after this so called messaging thing has began. Even internet chatting sometimes contributes in us losing our language skills, like we forget to put the proper punctuations and even capital letters as and when required.

yes i also agree with you that technology has many disadvantages along with its advantages.like the above problem of short forms in messages but with the limitations of having to use less number of words .we the greatest creation of Almighty created new ways to communicate amongst us . we human beings have a tendency of creating new ways to solve all problems .
now a days i too find strange while writing regarding poor usage of grammar but its left to us as to when and where to use short forms.
there is no lazyness in us due to technology .Technology is just a tool which helps to do things in a better way .

Actually I am not aware of this thing because I usually use the full spelling even when I am messaging because while making short forms 1 thing that arise in my mnd is whether the other person will be able to understand the short form or not therefore I use full forms only.

i disagreed with you guys and the reason is, if a man know 2 languages 1 language can disturb other one? i don't think so, it is the same thing short messeging is for chat or sms and if some one know this it can't disturb other proper language.

Yes it could, but I remember my mother cautioning us against picking up on "chip and dale" kinda language in comics as kids. That was only a fun way of spelling and as long as we knew the difference, it was okay. Same here? If we restrict it to sms only, and know the difference - like we don't grow up using that, I think we will be okay and it sure makes typing and getting more across for less in a cinch!

True. In order to write the shortest form of words our spellings have gone worse. Sometimes we are even more confident on our current spell errors that we feel that this is correct as we are using it in our daily conversation but seriously our spellings are getting horrible. And I totally agree with you that we are becoming lazy even while writing answer to the questions in an examination hall.
