children under 6 should have 'crayola fun' homework. drawing things, coloring things. saying words. i remember doing that in kinderguarden and having a gas. i'm 38, so i'm from the past a bit...we colored pictures of cows brown and grass green...i knew what all that stuff was. we even made a snake, stuffing newspaper in a stocking and pasting two eyes on it...but we didn't have homework as kids do now.

The amount of homework depends on the age as well as the class the child is in. From the first year the child is at school they should have some homework, even just having to read one or two pages in a book and have it signed off by the parents.
As they get further into their education, the amount they get should increase of course. We must remember that they only go to school for about 6 hours/day whereas once they start work, they will be expected to work at least 8 hours per day, so the earlier they start learning to be attentive for longer hours the better off they will be.
I think by the end of primary school they should be getting around an hour/day homework with it increasing as they progress through their education. Doing homework also teaches children how to think, do research and work without constant supervision.
