Hello all, I have been diagnosed with (Polycycstic ovarian syndrom) PCOS. I was wondering if any one can help me find out what the long term results are of having this and if there is actually a way to treat it. Also if you have it and don't mind posting that you have it. Im also curious how many people have it, or even know what it is. Thanks all

I have had PCOS probably since I was 9 or 10. That's when the weight gain started. I had the classic symptoms-lack of regular periods - could go for months or even years between them. Dark patched under my arms, upper thighs and on my neck (there's a term for it - something nigrans) I started getting very hairy allo ver my body and face, and have thinning hair on top of my head. I had high blood pressure problems from when I was 15. I had fertility problems, but luckily through treatments I had three boys (first one, then twins) My blood pressure went once I had the boys. As I've gotten older, I have been on Spironolactone for the hairiness and it's wonderful. But in the last few years I have developed late onset diabetes, controlled by Metformin. The blood pressure has returned too. That's what you can expect. Good luck sweetie!

I never had the problem with fertility but i have had every other aspect of it off and on scence i hit puberty and i never new what it was until after my last son was born. It is crazy cause i have been suffering ridicule for years on account of facial hair and weight, i never new that it was because of a problem with me until a friend told me about it and asked me all these questions and i answered yes to all of them. Im still learning but i hear people have pain with this and i have had major and chronic pain in my back hips and joints for years.

I was diagnosed this past May. I was put on Metformen. They wanted to put me on birth control but with my family history I can't take it. I have the insulin resistant kind.

I was diagnosed in January 2005 after 5 years of irregular periods. In 2000, I had an ultrasound where they found the start of cysts but I was not told. It was not until I was married and wanted to have children that I got retested and formally diagnosed. I went on Clomid for 4 months but after becoming sick, I went off it and tried natural herbs (prescribed by a registered herbalist) and fell pregnant within 4 months. I am waiting to see if pregnancy and birht has helped to mainitain my periods now or if I will need to start treatmet to regulate my periods again.

I'm 23 and got diagnosed with PCOS when I was 20. Birth control, low carb diet and exercising seem to have helped me. I know I have been told that becoming pregnant will be a challenge. The only long term results I'm still facing is excess facial hair, but I get waxed on a monthly basis. http://www.pcosupport.org/ has some good information on it, I look at that website all the time.

Hello. I have PCOS. I was diagnosed about 2 years ago. My doctors don't seem to think it's that big of a deal, and I don't have health insurance anymore so I can't see a specialist. When I was going to the doctor, they gave me Donnatal, which is a medicine for IBS, but it helped so much with the pain. I usually will not take any kind of medicine, if it is not natural, but I did take this. Since being off that, I have taken OTC Belladonna pills, which help.

I have been diagnosed with PCOS back in 2002, when I was abt 22yrs old and had been on hormones for 6 months because I was having excess and irregular bleeding. But the hormones helped in regulating the cycles well, but I had so bad side effects that I was all the time feeling very weak and nauseated and the very thought of going one floor up with the steps would make me nervous because I was so terribly weak.I couldnt even hold a cup of tea as my hands were trembling slightly and I was very afraid I would spill the tea all over. These symptoms might vary depending on each person. With these side effects, I stopped using the hormones and thereafter I was having normal cycles till late 2005 when I started having very high bleeding again which was not controlled until I was given oral contraceptives. They seem to be working fine for abt 8 months, but now I am developing so many side effects. I have migraine headache now and then and more recently I noticed that I have varicose veins on my calf muscles and my shoulder and elbow joints constantly make popping sounds.....but the solution for all these is be on hormones if they suit you..otherwise reducing weight and constantly working out will back the cycles to normalcy. and its reported from several studies that most women dont have any problems in conceiving especially when the weight is under control. I also have insulin resistance....so watching my diet is helping me a lot with the symptoms. I take the minimum amount of carbohydrates in diet and take mostly protein rich diets and fruits. Its always good to choose diets low in GI values. avoiding all white stuff like maida, plain white flour, sugar is a must if you dont want the symptoms typical of PCOS patients. Symptoms vary from person to person...but diet is the most important thing to have a peaceful life free of PCOS symptoms.

Yes I was only diagnosed in the last 12 months. But I have learnt alot in that time and appreciate how much can be done over that time, the way I am feeling better and it is a wonderful news to not be left standing with no help. Thankyou I have had others respond in my topic on this also.

My 16 yo dd was just diagnosed with this last month. She was put on Metformin and is doing well with it so far. She's already had bladder cancer, so they are very concerned about her not having periods and the risks of uterine cancer. They want to get those regulated right away. She doesn't have the excess hair or hair loss, but does have the dark patches of skin behind her neck. She's changed her eating habits and he wants to see her lose 10% of her weight over the next couple of months. We've been very supportive of her and have been trying to help her out by going for walks in the evening and exercising together. It will help us both lose weight! Good luck to you!
