Will we ever really succeed at space travel?

It's been over 40 years since mankind first put a man on the moon, and though technology has increased dramatically since then there has been very little more progress in terms of manned space travel to other planets/moons in our solar system. Apart from sending satellites into orbit for military/commercial uses and the odd shuttle flight, does anyone think we'll ever really succeed at space travel. For instance do you believe we will ever build a space station on Mars, or visit another planet in our solar system.

I think the issue of resources is a very good point - we're currently constrained in terms of advances on Earth in many areas, so advances beyond this may stretch us - unless we could find a way of finding and utilising resources off-planet... Thanks you for responding.

I think we will. There is a determination to do it. The more we learn and the more technology advances, the more possible it is.The closer to a reality it will become.

Agreed in thast technology opens many doors. This is going to be one tough challenge though in my opinion.
