We usually let the cats decide. Some of them seem to need to go out and some are content to stay in all the time. Humphrey, the cat in the avator likes to go out for 15 minutes or so in the morning but mostly he's an indoor cat.

I am with irisheyes on this one - I have 5 cats (four male and one female) and a catflap fitted to the back door, and they can choose to come in and out as they please. My two oldest boys don't go out much anymore - just maybe 15 minutes in the morning and the same in the evening, and my female refuses to go out at all - but the two youngest boys spend more time outside than in, and just come in to eat and maybe sleep for an hour and then go out again.

I have 4 cats, two of them are inside and 2 of them are inside/outside.
Before I let any cat of mine go outside I make sure they are spayed or neutured. Then I pretty much let the cat decide.
One of my inside cats is perfectly fine staying indoors. I think she gets scared going outside.
My other inside cat will for sure go outside when she is spayed. She has gotten out a few times already and tries to go out whenever we open the doors.
One of the outside/inside cats comes in pretty much to eat except in the winter, when he will come in and sleep for a few hours.
Jordan who is my avatar picture spends a little more time inside but goes outside to potty. She is great at letting me know when she has to go potty. She sleeps with me every night and usually wakes me up around 4 to go potty.
She does spend a little more time outside in the summer but for the most part I think it is pretty even.
i have had many cats over the years and actually the ones that were outside/inside tend to live longer than the ones that were strictly inside.
I have never had a cat that is strictly outside so I can't say anything about that.

My daughters cats come in during the day and go out during the night. I live in a temperate climate and the cats love it. most of the time we have to bribe them to come in for food.

I presently keep my cat inside, but I live on a farm so I have outside cats as well. So I guess I really don't have a preference

I have 2 cats they are inside cats.. i have heard that its so we keep them in.. i have one cat that was a outside cat.. and every so often he tries running out, we thought of leaving him out or making him an indoor outdoor cat.. but then we feel bad for the other cat because then he wants to go out.. plus we don't want him to bring in fleas or any diseases from outside.. So we just keep them both inside.. the only thing i don't like is.. cleaning the litter box.. and them up all night running around the house.. being brats..:)

I have a bunch of cats and all but one stay in the house. If I don't let the one out,he will destoy the screens. And yes he is fixed,he just prefers to be outside.

My cats have always been indoor cats until about 2 years ago, my oldest started rushing to get outside every time we opened the door! She drove us crazy! We were constantly trying to run after her and bring her back in. It got to the point that it just wasn't worth it any more. We live in the country, she was only walking around our house, and would come back in shortly afterward. So now, she goes out in the morning for about 10 minutes, then comes right back in.

I sincerely tried to keep mine in but she's a tricky little thing. She waits in ambush behind curtains, chairs, and other things for me to open the door and then she bolts. She gets outside and doesn't know what to do so then she plays the same game to get back in. I just keep her shots up to date and use preventitive flea treatments to ofset her little outdoor escapades.

I have 5 cats and 2 previously, all have been inside cats, we let them in the backyard in the summer and spirng because they enjoy it, but I've always seemed to live near main roads and where ever I have lived heard of neighbours outdoor cats getting hit, so no chance.
