I am a high school teacher responsible for educating students on college choices and majors. I'd like some idea of the variety of college majors and how that relates to the current job you do. My major was music education. I am no longer a music teacher, but still a teacher, and now a guidance counselor. How about you?

Looking back at all the things they tell you while growing up there is something that all students should learn in high school....
They should learn how to work with their hands or to earn without having to be employed by someone. They should be taught how to be their own boss so that they are not easily manipulated by the need for a paycheck via the approving eye of an employer.
The next thing they should learn as there are many paths they can take that might not involve college right after high school. The non-traditional student can have some great advantages of being able to earn money already and, with that experience, make better choices regarding what they feel the need to learn. Too often, people enter college and fall prey to the aspirations of others, only to find out that they really have nothing but a huge bill for a degree that will not yield enough to live on AND pay the student loans.

I majored in performance music in college. I went for 2 years and then quit to get married. Almost 20 years later I went back to finish my degree. By then, I was a cake decorator specializing in wedding cakes, and just wanted to finish my degree "just to have it". It was never my intention or option to make a career in music. Over 40 is a little old to begin a music career! LOL

My major was information technology. After getting my degree I found out that you need to have experience to get an entry level position. So now I am majoring in Special Education. I plan to work in this field.
