That, my friend, is quite a good analysis. Actually, most smokers are unable to justify their habits! lol

A long time ago there was no stigma attached to it. People just tried it and got addicted
I actually recall being at the doctors when I was a child and he was smoking while he wrote out my prescription.
I don't know what the excuse is this day and age

i used to smoke before.. everyone pretty much said every reason why people smoke.
some do it out of curiosity, that eventually turned into a sense of belongingness, cool image, a way to pass time, or to just do it...
i know a friend who smokes when ever he takes a dump... other than that, he's clean... some eventually get to do it as a habit...
i smoke occasionally, when i drink a bottle or two, but other than that, i'm good...
it's a matter of discipline if you ask me, a choice...

People smoke because of certain reasons, peer pressure, to relieve stress, for some unexplained reason people tend to like smoking after a meal or during a drinking session. Im a smoker myself, i started as young as 16 years old during my high school years, peer pressure is the reason back then and up until now i can't stop it. Of course i tried to quit several times but witout success.

people start to smoke from a peer pressure issue. also because when they are young it isnt encouraged to smoke, and when something isnt encouraged youngsters are more likely to do it as they have a rebellious issue.
if you talk about the age of 21-25 then i think they want to try it, meaning they want to try something that they havent done yet, because people always want to do this. once they have started they dont see any immediate negative side effects and presume because of the hear say they have most likely heard that it relaxes them and makes it so they dont eat so often, because of this the individual smokes a few, and then a few more and keeps on smoking. then they start to notice the negative side effects and realise that it is bad for them. because of this they attempt to just simply not smoke. however the niccotine has created a reliance from the individual on itself so that he or she continues smoking and puts it to the back of their mind that they are bad for them... and they will continue to smoke, even with friends or family complementing, complaining or similar that it is bad for their health, and they will just turn a blind eye to it.

I also smoke. I started when I was a teenager because I thought it made me look tougher. lol I've smoked since then simply because I have been unable to stop. I did try the patches once and did very well on them but my ex would blow smoke in my face from his cig. and I was having a problem with overdose. So please be very careful when you are using the patch. I would love to quit but I fear the weight gain (just dropped 67 pounds); and becoming a clock tower snipper from the stress.

ther is no specific reason to start it ,
the most significant is company of friends you are in , because it just takes one try and one gets addicted to it ,
there is no way to keep tab on this because where ever bad company is there at some age they get into addictions and then one rotten apple rots all other apples

I really don't understand why people smoke. I do admit I tried it when I was younger, but I just didn't understand what the big deal was so I didn't continue. I didn't like it. And it didn't make me feel cool or anything special. I had a friend tell me that they started smoking so that they wouldn't eat so much and gain weight...

Most of the people start smoking while they are in school or college. Some of these people start smoking only to show off. They think it looks cool to smoke. They are attracted to it and they think it is a style factor.

A good number of people that I have talked to, seem to have started smoking out of peer pressure. Others did it because their parents smoked or something like that. A good number of them regret later. For some, they find it a sedative.

People specially in their childhood start/try smoking just out of curiosity. As a child grows in his teens he may see smoking as a sign of machoism amongst his peers. Some youngsters start smoking to emulate their elders who smoke. Some people take course to smoking when being coaxed by their peers just to have a feel of it. Some resort to smoking due to any tensed situation in their life to which they find smking as a recourse to relief. After any of the above initial starts one may continue due to addiction.

Few friends of mine started smoking just to prove they 2 arent behind none but most of them quit it 4 ever but very few of them got used to it & are very much willing to give it away but they are saying i have only this bad habit & its just 4 fun that now smoking. Interesting thing is that they give lectures about health hazards about smoking & says i can quit it any time they wanted but it rarely happened.

I started smoking when I was 7 because my parents smoked and my mom would buy them for me, guess she thought it was cute...been smoking for 22 years and it's not so cute now! I want to stop, but I don't...it's so hard. I've only stopped once when I was 14 because I got sick. I don't know why I can't stop now....force of habit, and addiction would be my guess. I wish I could have the will power you had. For some, it's not so easy.

The peer pressure to smoke can be pretty overwhelming. I was able to ignore though as my mom was a big smoker and the smell was just vile (it was my aversion to the smoking that finally made her quit). I just can't imagine walking around all day smelling like that, never mind the health risk (my mom passed away from cancer 5 years ago aged 64)

hmmm...i experienced this twice.i dont like people smoking. I have two friends who at first didnt smoke but then starts smoking because of influenced by friends. at first actually i scold them but then they always keep the same reason, just for fun, not addicted. When time goes by, of course they will be addicted and at the end they are heavy smoker now!!! I'm so sad. What can i do. Just accept it because they're my friends. And now i have to cope with the environment.
