You should have adequate protection on your computer if you are going to surf the internet. I use AVG and there is a free edition available on the internet. Also I have AdAware installed as well as Spybot Search and Destroy, all of which I run every day to check that ther are no problems. You should also make sure that you have the updated version of each of these, because a new virus can get through if you don't have the current auti-virus installed.
Good luck and hope it goes well for you. :)

Install Kaspersky Internet security as this will provide you complete protection against viruses and also will help you surf the internet safely and detect any sort of worms if they are being downloaded onto your computer.

Use Avast, it runs while you compute and is always ready to identify and have you delete or put it into a chest. Also watch which sites you go to since some of them will give you problems. Naughty sites are full of that crap. I am totally happy with Avast and it is free.

Best Practices to Avoid Virus Infection
Below are some good practices to prevent your computer from virus infection:
* Turn off automatic opening of email attachments, never open attachments from unknown sources or attachments you are not expecting.
* Always scan diskettes, CD's and any other removable media before using them.
* Always scan files downloaded from the Internet before using them
* Do not install any unapproved software on your computer.
* Ensure that your virus pattern files are updated.
* Ensure that your computer is patched with the latest security updates.
* Scan your computer on a regular basis
It is always good to perform regular backup of your data. That is the most convenient and secure way to recover your files should there be a virus attack.
