A severely handicapped girl by the name of Ashley (age 9) has the mental ability of just a 3 month old baby- she cannot talk or walk. Due to this, her parents have decided to give her hormone treatments and surgeries to stunt her growth. The parents of this young girl say that by doing this, her life will be made easier as she will be of a lighter weight- making transportation, bathing and family activities easier. Do you think that this is ethical? Would you do it? Why or why not?

That is very sad. Nobody would really be able to comment on it, unless they experienced it themselves. Her parents love her, and are doing what they think best.

This is a great point. I think it would be easier to take care of the child, can you imagine moving a 150 pound girl (when she get's older) I think that would be almost impossible. If I had a child that was in her condition, I would also do this, as long as there was no pain or complication's to my child

I think that the reason that the parents are doing this, is not to make her life easier, but to make their lives easier. I think that they are being selfish, and are only thinking of themselves. If they are doing this to their daughter, I wonder what the medical community thinks of this. And what about the doctor(s) involved with this, are they being ethical in this kind of treatment of the girl. And what does the ruling medical board think of this? Is this treatment justified? Personally I don't.

That's a terrible think to do to a child. I wouldn't do it to my baby, I'd rather let her grow on her own.

sometimes paretns think that they will be able to live with their child and will be able to give them a good life. so inpiste of such serious problems they continue to be doing what they do. but at some certain stage they feel no their decision was not right. so if you think from the perspective of if it is ethical or not then definitely it is not. but if you think from the perspective of suffer child then i feel it is fine.
