How do people get 4 digit numbers of referrals?

What's the secret? I look at the top referrers list, and there are people with over 1000 referrals. How do you do it?

They will ban you if you get caught doing that I'm afraid, its not really worth the risk I don't think.
I just have mine on my website and get a new referral join every couple of days, I get about 3 new people most weeks I think

they have got to be either cheating, or really good at getting thier links out on the web....
