IS IT POSSIBLE? Help wanted from experienced myLot users.

I am new to internet and broadband usage.
While Australia leads the world in many things, it is way, WAY behind in broadband. The usual broadband speed here is 512 kbps and most connections are on a 200-300MB maximum download per month.
I have a 1GB maximum download per month. I was amazed to see I have used over 400MB in one week and only from using myLot!
My understanding is that every page opened is a download. Sometimes it is necessary to pass through (open) up to four pages to return to where I started after posting a response.
**Is there a way to return to where I started quickly? that is, without opening so many pages?
**Is it possible for myLot to improve the site by automatically returning us to where we were? or at least to the discussions page?
**Is it possible for the "sub heading" (I know know what it is called, but where the "discussions I've started" "discussions my friends have started" etc are available) to be included every time the discussions page is there? That would cut out another page opening.
Because my download has been so high, I find I am reluctant to respond to discussions with many answers or where numerous page openings are necessary.
I am also reluctant to check back on threads I've been involved with, knowing that I'm using so much download.
Any advice on how to cut down on my downloads would be appreciated. I really enjoy my discussions here and don't want to have to cut my time by three-quarters!

Hi cloudwatcher. That is so constricted. 1GB max/month? That should be unlimited. I think the images takes a bit off the MB, so I think disabling image loading from your web browser can help much. If you are using firefox, go to tools, and then options, and then content, and then uncheck load images automatically. Once you run firefox again, you will not see any images but all text messages. I think this helps a lot in loading the pages faster and cuts down on the MB download.
If you are using Explorer, go to tools, and then internet options, and then advanced, and then multimedia, and uncheck show pictures, play animations, play sounds, play videos, etc. You can uncheck as many as you want, to avoid wasting MB of limited download.
If you want to read the messages offline, you can go to file and then save pages as according to what filename you will assign to it. Maybe this will help you load up pages and navigate through it offline without having to load the pages up everytime. Do this offline so that your usage would not register at your ISP.
I really hope this helps.

I have 1GB a month which is considered enormous by most people. The usual is 200-300MB and some even have 500MB maximum download. On most of these plans, each MB over the limit is charged at $2 - $3 per MB, but on some, once you exceed the limit, it is "shaped" which means you are cut back to dial up speed.
Thanks for the ideas on removing images, but that would make it difficult to find friend's postings. I'd prefer not to do this.
I think a quick navigation button would be the best help.

That's a great question Cloudwatcher. I have been trying to figure the same thing, and the best I've come up with is to put in really descriptive tags, and return via them. Whichever way you return seems very time consuming to me, and I agree, it should be made much simpler.
I'm sorry I can't be more constructive about this but maybe Mylot would consider adding a quick return button. It's worth a try, anyhow.
Brightest Blessings! :-)

Thanks for trying, Darkwing. I certainly hope myLot will keep improving their site and add something to assist quick returns. I've made the suggestion, but I really don't think mails to myLot get any response.
Meanwhile, my responses will have to be fewer or I'll find myself back to dial up speed.

I hope mylot admin is looking into this question and do something to resolve the problem. By that time we have to surf in the same way we are doing now.

I can only make a suggestion that I use quite a lot during my sessions on mylot and other sites because of the memory tends to fill up and I found one of the answers works with me.
I go into tools on explorer and delete the temporary files that are stored there, plus any cookies that I do not need that other sites have put there.
Hope it helps! as after I do that my computer tends to work a lot faster.

yikes, it's a scary thought to me and i'm completely surprised that your broadband company limits your bandwidth. i've honestly never heard of such a thing. is this a practice that is common in many other countries. i have broadband through my cable connection here in america. what is the situation in the country where you live? if this is a common problem in the world, perhaps myLot should take some of your suggestions to make its site more accomadating for everyone in the world.

i'm sorry to add an additional comment here, but i forgot to add something. I wonder how much it is that you pay for your broadband connection. hopefully if they are limiting your bandwidth, they are giving you some kind of amazing great rate. also, if you pay more, can you get more bandwidth, or are you only given one option? thanks for your answers, this is very interesting.

The cheapest broadband with a reputable company in Australia is about $20 per month with a 200MB download limit. After that, it costs $2 or $3 per MB.
I pay $40 month for a 1GB download but it is still only at 512kbps.
Last week I used over 400MB on myLot. If navigation didn't involve passing through so many pages, the download usage would be much less.
Thank you for your interest.

Im more interested in knowing the things Australia leads the world in.
Your best bet is to contact mylot direct, if enough users ask the more they will listen, you can also dump that garbage Internet Explorer and use Firefox as your browser, It loads 3 times as fast as IE, is way safer and you can tab browse so you dont need to keep downloading pages, you can just switch back and forth between tabs.

I already use Firefox, but please explain the "tab browse". That is a new one to me.
Thanks for replying.

Yes, I am going through the same problem. Usually when I had not joined mylot, my 500 MB Connection was enough for me. But it is now exceeding the limits. Now I am planning to have unlimited broadband connection. I prefer 256kbps speed. In the mylot discussion the tag option which comes after when you post the discussion already, if this tag come with the same page, and you are able to put tags or keywords in the same page, it will really very helpful for all mylot user like me and you. Not the permanent solution but the broadband use and time can be saved by this.

Hi cloudwatcher, I am from Australia as well and I understand what you mean firstly it all depends on who your internet server is?? as some of these allow you to download as much as you like not with broadband but with one called Austarnet if you are interested then this would be the best one to join no contracts and you can do as much as you like hope this helps.

Thanks Kathy, but as I understand it, Austarnet is a package deal with Austar and we don't want pay TV.
The ISP I have was the best deal with a reliable server we could get for THIS area. Thanks anyway.

To better navigate discussion was already requested 2 month ago, I think mylot wrong with what we want for navigate, mylot doing it on they way example discussion A get response then it will come back to first page. for some newbie this is might confused and they will just press next button to look for another discussion and searching a discussions make they interest. my suggestion to mylot if can, please list discussions by the date this is will help a lot for some people.

istantoo, thanks for your reply. My problem isn't with navigation so much as using too much download to get there. What we need is a return button or something to use fewer pages to return.

So if im not wrong your problem is because when you open mylot you will download to much for opening page right?
In Internet explorer there is feature called "Temporary Internet Folders" set it to 1024MB It will help you to save bandwith for loading page you already visited. also it will make page loading more faster because you don't need to re-downloading images or some files again. for back page you can just hit back it's already there on IE or firefox.

Thanks for the idea, but since I am already paying $40 month and unlimited download is at least $60 month, I don't think that is an option. Thanks anyway

Hi there Cloudwalker ou do your Disc clean and that as I did not think that it should affect you in that way as such
I think Steve will probably see this and give you the right advice on it as I am not to sure about it
I will keep on eye open as I would like to know this to
I have used the net now for 2 years but I never knew this

Thanks Gabs, but you probably won't have the same trouble in England. I believe broadband - and dial up for that matter - are much faster there, and unlimited.

Maybe that is because I try to answer every response, and to keep returning to threads I've been joining in with in the discussion?

There is nothing to feel regret.Even in India..the broadband speed was upto 512 kbps till 31st December 2006.Now the government of India have announced some really new incentives and called 2007 as the year of BroadBand..Now they have increased the bandwidth of BroadBand from 256kbps to 2mbps and also increased the data usage limit..
So wait for the right ime to come and you will enjoy the fast and furious speed of broadband.Till now enjoy posting discussions and rsponses..

I'd love to continue to enjoy posting discussions and responses, but once my limit is passed, it will be difficult. If I continue at the same rate, I can only operate for two weeks in a month!

I'm not a computer whizz kid at all .. but I have a very cranky old computer and to cut down waiting time (I'm on broadband but my computer sometimes works as if it's on dial up speed grrr) I open several pages at once .. so perhaps if you were to make shortcuts to desktop to the sections you like best, like 'discussions I've started' 'discussions my friends have started' etc that would save a few pages having to be started
And would it help if you browser opened new pages in the old browser window ?? (go to Tools, Internet options, Advanced and you can tick a box to make this happen) would that count as being the same window ??
Sorry it's not much but I thought it might be helpful to you ..

Yeh!
your need is perfectly alright.
Ther are so many other issue mylot is
already working on.
As such you can send your suggestion directly to mylot.com
The problem you are is not only with download bytes but also is cumbersome for all users.
The tag search is not satisfactory.
Even though you type a specific string and want to opt for "All words together" only is not possible.
So many problems dear.
Just wait and watch, I can't guess what will happen to the speed if the members number will grow to millions

Shop around. I'm an Aussie, and I've got unlimited on dialup. Still waiting for that free modem... I'm just cheap, but I'm sure you can do better than that.

Try using the history from your Internet Explorer. That should not be a download and it should not count towards the download limit. Try to select the webpages already viewed from the History. History actually caches the webpages and iit will not download again I guess. I think you should try that to save you from overusing.

Hey good lcuk with that.
We must be spolied in the UK. We've got unlimited bandwidth (broadband service with NTL) and we don't think about these issues. But I guess this issue is very real in other parts of the world.
Good luck with that anyway.
