Thankyou for you response, I know what to use them for. I was more interested in the process & the mechanic of how they work.

okay if you can't be bothered reading the sites people have submitted, trust me I do that as well at times. then heres an easy way for this, if you get a jotting pad, or a hand writing book, you see where you write, most of them have a thin blue line, well putting it simply, if you take a different perspective, the blue link is like another storage, so you have where you write, and the blue ink line. some people might think what the hell is he going on about, but its the same principle in a sense. I would continue this, but am seriously tired. so night all.

By changing the focal point or wave length of the laser used to write data to the disks or read from them, you can determine the point at which you want to etch or read from the laser, which could either be in the first layer of material, or a few microns farther away in the second layer of material. If you use the laser properly you can read and write from the second layer without affecting the data on the first layer. This is the basic principle under which they operate.
