Nothing wrong with seperating pups from thier mother but they should not be removed before at least 8 weeks old prefer 12 .The people that remove puppies at 6 weeks tend to do so so they can sell them not have to deal with with it is for the money .Puppies learn social skills from thier mother but after 12 weeks they need to bound with thier new pack thier new family so thats the time to place them .As far as giving a puppy as a gift it is not recomend unless you know for certain they want one a dog is for life and a commitment that last some 14 years or more not some thing that is great today and can be put on a shelf tomarrow .

I'd be like you, it would be difficult to separate with them. But I also know you can't keep them all. They grow up and become big dogs. If this person is your friend then perhaps you can maintain a relationship with the dog and know that it has a happy life.
