An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away &

I'm sure most of us have used the phrase "an apple a day keeps the doctor away". I have read where some researchers have found that the apple may reduce some forms of cancer such as lung, colon, and prostrate cancer. Since the apple has no colesterol, it may also help to reduce colesterol too. It has been thought that some of the chemicals in the apple could also protect the brain from the damage that brings about parkinson's disease and alzheimer's. It seems that eating apples or drinking apple juice also decreases loss of memory. The latest discovery I read not too long ago is that the apple is a better wakerupper than coffee and is healthier. I read recently that if you have problems keeping awake eating an apple or two will help you overcome the drowsiness. How many of your eat apples and how often? I like to eat at least three of four a week but only in the morning or early afternoon so that I won't fall asleep while I am here in mylot. My favorite apple is the Macintosh but I can't get it here in Portugal so I have to be content with Granny Smith apples golden delicious apples. What's your favorite?Does anyone else have anything to add that might be of interest.

I would like to add one information that apple is good because it contains Antioxidants(whic control substance which can damage the cells), a new word in nutition nowadays. Apple i think is one of the best natures gift to us and it can be injested in any form including juices. Researchers have also found that apple contains fibre as well as pectin. They believe that fibre and pectin aid digestion and may also help limit the absorption of cholestrol in body. So keep eating apples everyday.

My favorite apple is Golden Delicious. I have a story that is kind of about apples. A friend of mine became very ill. He was over weight, high blood pressure, stress, you name it , he had it. His doctor could not get him to take his medicine correctly and in desperation (I think)talked my friend into trying a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and one teaspoon of honey. 6 months later I am so amazed with the change in my friend that I am now trying it! He has lost 65 Lbs.is as sharp as a tack and has his libido back! His wife is in alt; she thought by now she would be burring him. I will keep everyone informed. Wish me luck!

That's great. Don't look back because I might be gaining on you cuz I'm gonna get on that bandwagon too. Thanks so much for your input. It's good news for everyone. Maybe I should go out and invest in apple vinegar.

I am not familiar with any apple diets for losing weight. I assume that eating good healthy food and a supplement of a couple of apples might do the trick. Perhaps if you surfed the net you could find a diet using apples as a base. Thank you for dropping by.

how are you supposed to take it, in morning or evenings? as I am going to try this too. I really wish to reduce weight. I hate medicines and am looking for any alternate ways to reduce weight. Walking is not in my regular routine as I really get tired juggling too many things whole day.

I am living in tropical country now and it's hard to find fresh apple. Apples sold here are usually expensive and had been sitting in the storage for very long time. (transport from the exporting country takes time) So i don't eat many, it's like 1 or 2 per week. I prefer to have ohter local fruits, which are also rich in vitamines and good for health. And most importantly they are cheap and fresh :) Eg like papaya, pineapple, mango, rambutan & etc.

All fruits are nutritious and healthy but from what I have read the apple has more qualities. I used to live in tropical areas and enjoyed all those you mentioned and a few others. Thanks for dropping by and for your input.

That is really true. I do agree with your discussion. I live in India. I never eat apples. For that matter i dont eat any fruits. I hate them. Once upon a time i loved fruits. Some bad day, i ate banana which had insects in it. I didnt notice, at the end i saw it was not good. So I puked afterwards. After i stopped eating bananas, or any fruits. So i am affraid that it may have insects inside. Sometimes i eat only apple, where it is very fresh, just flicked from the Tree.

I don't think it is a cure for cancer but over a long period of time apples can perhaps prevent some cancers. Sorry about your bad experience with fruit but I think that as long as you check them first to see there are no insects they would be okay to eat. Thanks for dropping by.

One of the most popular quotations of the 19th centurary was "an apple a day keeps the doctor away". i remember my school teacher use to say The rose is a rose And was always a rose But the theory now goes That the apple's a rose by poet Robert Frost I have some interesting note on apple from the newspaper article i collected long back. The apple derives its name from the Latin pomum, meaning fruit in English, and is classified as a pome, afruit that has many tiny seeds with a core at the center. Throught history apples symbolizes luxury, pleasure, love, fertility and even jealousy. Apples are one of the most popular fruits in the world. At present there are at least 7500 different varietties that vary in shape, color, texture, firmness, crispness, acidity, juiciness, sweetness, etc. I like apple because i believe its travellers fruit. I mean i can carry two or three in my bag and go to office. I can eat anytime, usually in afternoon, may be to reduce sleep, its sweet taste. What i enjoy the most is the sound of chewing an apple and juice that you taste. I'm looking for information on Green apple available somewhere in Japan. Anyone can send infomation on this.

PS: That's a nice poem from Frost. Did you know that the apple seeds are poisonous? It's true but there is not enough poison to cause any worry whatsoever.

I've always loved apples, especially Red Delicious and Granny Smith (my favorite for pies). After reading your discussion, you can be assured apples were just added to my grocery shopping list for this week. They're easy to carry to work or to have for a snack rather than something that's not as good for your health. Thanks for the great information. I love most fruits and usually buy a mixture of them. Now apples are back at the top of my list. I really love baked apples, and hubby just said that's a great idea for dessert instead of something that's not as healthy.

Glad I could be of help. I too have started eating more apples and have passed the info on to most of my old duffer friends. I mention it to my young buddies but they aren't quite at that age where things like this would be good for their health. But at least I am planting the seed and who knows in the future when I'm six feet under and pushing up stinking benjamins. Always nice to see you claudia.

I am afraid I don't have any information on whether apples can cure cancer I think it just helps reduce the chances of getting some cancers...not all. Also I don't know anything about pineapples but it certainly might be worth looking into. I love pineapples...especially fresh pineapple. Thank you for dropping by and for your input.

An apple a day sure won't hurt! But I think it takes an apple plusa balanced diet to keep the doctor away. i eat an apple 3-4 times a week. I like Fuji's and Golden Delicious. Apple sauce is NOT the same as fresh apples. Parents should give their children fresh apples instead of apple sauce when they can.

but if you put an apple in a liquifier but not cook it wouldn't it have the same potential? It sounds logical to me. Something like cold applesause. Thanks for dropping by and your input.

I know applies are also considered a "negative-calorie" food because they burn more calories while they are being digested than they cause you to gain by eating them. What really interests me is the part where they wake you up, though, because I don't sleep much. I think I'm going to try that. And judging by my mom and grandma's memory problems, I think I'll be eating lots of apples, considering I don't want to have those problems as well.
