It is quite unbelievable that the times of Mahabarata was around 5 lakhs years back. I believe 3 thousand to 3thousand 5 hundred before the birth of Christ is a more realistic estimate as archaeological finds near the Mahabharata noted Dwarka has proved the relics to be around 6thousand years old so it can be assumed that Mahabharata was contemporary to the lost city being excavated from under the sea near Modern Day Runn of Kutch.

3,500 years ago and its an Indian epic story.
It was the writings about the history of mankind. There came a stage in the cosmic cycle when Adhama tries to take over Dharma. When the forces of destruction were raising their hood and it was becoming difficult for a common man to continue living with honest means , Lord Krishna came and by his proper guidance and blessings to humanity saved the world from destruction.

according to aryabahtta mahabharata happened in some 3000 BC. because that time is treated as the starting of the kaliyug, and according to the records kaliyuga started after the end of the mahabharat war.
according to the dating theory implemented for dating the found pieces of dwaraka city. we come to conclusion it existed in 1300BC to say 1500 BC. that is also can be treated the time of the mahabharata.
