It is true that we are becoming very dependant on computers. They are supposed to be an asset but we have now reached the level of usage whereby a business comes to a halt if the computer system goes. This is only due to the lack of forethought of some companies, so I would blame technology for that.
The biggest danger is the dependance of hospitals and nuclear power stations, where I do not believe that we have sufficient ability to continue without computer support. That was the great fear with the potential Millenium Bug.

I can tell from what you are saying that you have never worked in the IT field or actually worked for a company that acted reasonably. Every company I have worked for or a member of my family has worked for has off site back ups and fully maintained stations should something happen to the computers or servers at their facility. These are called disaster recovery facilities.

You have misunderstood my statement.
I am fully aware that we can restore the data, but I was referring to the general operation of the company while the computer system is down.
All of the information that I use is stored on the computer, so if the system is down for 3 days then I am unable to access it for 3 days. This makes it extremelt difficult to operate the business in a satisfactory manner.
The same would apply to a nuclear power station. How would the station operate if the computers did not?

The internet/computers are a great but very fraille tool, and leaving them to manage as much as we do, is probably not a very good idea at all, didnt we learn that in the great Y2K impending disaster issue? Although people do love to invent impending disasters as well.

It is no more right than when humans were entirely agricultural and depended on the weather for our survival. Back then do you think people asked if it was right? What most people don't realize is all the fail safes that are in place should something happen to a company's computers or they lose power or something. I would rather be dependent on computers that can be controlled by people and maintained to work well than dependent on the weather for my survival because at any moment there can be a drought that kills all the crops and we all starve. Computers are just another tool that we use in modern society to improve the human condition, but like any tool dependency comes with some risks of what would happen should the tool fail. But this dependence that we have on computers I feel is no different than the dependence mankind has had on machines for most of modern civilization.

I agree with this person :) We do depend on them, but overall if God came down and took them away - we would not all die! Life would go on. It might be hard for awhile, but life would go on eventually. You could say back in the old days people were dependent on horses to get around, and if their horse was sick they were "stuck". Same with cars now, if your car is in the shop most people say "oh no, how will I get to work!"
So humans will always "depend" on something to do their job, or manage their lives, but it doesn't mean we can't survive without them.

Do we have any better option than computers today? I wanna say that today world will stop working if computers are taken away. Each and everybody is some way or the other dependent on it, whether directly or indirectly. I have no problems with computers and there is no need to think of world without computers. Only thing that can change is its size...it can become smaller and smaller.

I dont think its right to depend on computers as that would mean that we would not be able to live our lives without them. I do think computers should be used as a tool to get things done. Though saying that when my computer goed down and I am without it for a couple of days I really notice it.

i think it is too dangerous people put their lives into that small box and any one who can access that can know ur stuff ,thats too bad there is no security also coz we hackers ,we hv professional hackers to break the codes
its so creepy to know that some one is handling ur lives from a remote station with just an access to our data bases don't u think so

In today's era, everybody wants least headache, by using computers everybody is doing his work in less time... like in case of reservation, earlier we had to go to airport or railway station, but now by using computer and internet we can do this work in snap of fingers without wasting your whole day. it has become very important for us....

computer was made to save time and effort. but we have become very much dependent on computers. but i dont think its wrong. man has to accept change. just imagine a day without computers life will be so hectic and confusing. computers have made life easy and now we have time for ourselves as we save time. i dont think it is wrong to depend on computers.

I do think its bad, and I know it scares me how much I'm addicted. When my internet breaks down, I get withdrawal symptoms, I feel small, my city feels small, I worry constantly about whats happening when I'm not there and what I could be doing if I had it. Its definatly a bad thing, and I am definatly addicted. But at the same, we have a lot to be grateful to computers for and lets not forget that!!

well there re always pros nd cons of everythin but at d same time dependance on anythin is v harmful..in fact its increasing day by day..its affecting human relations majorly and one day wud come when everyone wud live an isolated life without anyone near by and jus a computer in hand..people find it hard to spend time with their dear ones and prefer spending time on net..

I think this is a good question. It is at most times such a convenient way to communicate and get things done, however, it puts a wedge on human relationships, impactst the environment in multiple ways and also is dumbing down the kids who no longer know how to add or spell because the computers do it for them!
I wouldn't promote total dependance. A balance would be good I think and more environmentally friendly computers would be awesome!

no i dont agree with u that we r so much dependent on computer that it becomes a warning to us. actually computer helps us to do a lots of things in a lesser time. its a creation of human. yes its true that now the discussion arise that if this invention is good for us or not. but i think every incident has some good as well as bad side. the good thing of using computer is that we can do everything in lesser time and less labour on the otherhand dependance on computer turns us as a sitting duck.

i dont say that the invention is bad..i know that there are pros and cons for everything on this earth.and its making life so easy for human beings that people have stopped using their mind...simple calculations like 2+2=4,spell-checking etc are making their mind useless..n in d coming time with the introduction of artificial intelligence computer and all it would cause major unemployment

it isnt right to depend too much. I only use computer as needed. for simple mathematical calculation, why should i bother to open my pc, for memorizing simple messages why do i need a computer?....

Yep, I think we've grown too dependent on computers. The other day, we had a power outage at work, and work practically stood still. Nothing got accomplished. We don't even know what's on the calendar because we use an electronic calendar. We don't have a phone list to use because it's on the computer. 2 hours were wasted. I keep a hard copy of all my important phone numbers now. Just to show you that nothing beats pen and paper!

Due to depence upon computer, people tend not to meet face to face anymore. Banking, paying bills even doing any business are all by computers and internet. Maybe later on, no more communication by sound. People become mute and not willing to see each other. If suddenly something happened to our line (as happened lately in Taiwan), our world maybe become havoc. There should be some limits to this and we must think about..

yes v true.the emails have replaced the conventional letters,voice-chatting has replaced phone calls and watching tv with family or spendin time woth your people by games on computer.its surely going to increase dependance day by day and one day would come when everyone would live in an isolated world with just a computer in hand

I love computers and they have been a blessing to me. Because of computers, I was able to quit a stressful job and work quietly at home, which I wanted more than anything. I am probably somewhat addicted to computers, but I don't care. I don't watch TV. I use computers to pay my bills, communicate with friends, get my news, and learn new things. I don't see how this could be a bad thing!

I fully understand what you are saying but I think that a dependency on them is fully understandable. The computer has enabled us to basically perform miracles. We can send men to other planets (Or at least the moon for now!), we can reduce the probability of crashes using computer controls in cars.
We can do so many things all thanks to computers. So when I say that a dependency on computers is a good thing, I mean it. But I also think that we depend on other things more than the computer and the internet. For example. I cannot imagine living at my house without electricity.
The need for running water and electricity is greater than the need for the computer and the internet. So I think that we are actually just using the word dependency as a substitute for "I'm lazy". Why should we try to work a large sum out using a full piece of paper, when I can just type in the question and immediately an answer returns. ??????
Cool Debate Question.
